The Citywire Wealth Manager Retreat, at least in our eyes, usually marks an important phase in the calendar. The summer is fast disappearing, autumn is on the way, and there always seems to be a renewed focus on meeting objectives for the rest of the year. While this year’s event will not take us to The Grove, and there are no chilly breezes or crunchy leaves underfoot, we still intend for an event that will sharpen minds and get you thinking about the challenges ahead. The economic situation, and indeed the political environment surrounding it is, let’s just say, interesting. As such we anticipate some engaging back-and-forth in our workshop sessions as well as some much-needed thought leadership. We also intend to look at the world beyond the immediate future. Former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow will be offering a unique perspective on change management and behind the scenes tales of Westminster. Andy Pag, an eco-traveller and sustainability expert, will be delivering an incredibly valuable message while also explaining how he travelled the world in a lorry powered by vegetable oil. This year we don’t have the pleasure of seeing you all face to face but we do have a huge amount to talk about. Not least because Brexit and Donald Trump, dominators of pre-pandemic welcome notes, won’t be taking any cues to politely leave the stage. But rather than divisive politics, perhaps we should finish with some positivity. We are genuinely delighted that you are joining us for this virtual retreat, and glad to be able to offer the event in a way that complies with social distancing. We’re in no doubt that this will be another truly memorable retreat. With best wishes, Ian Horne and Eleanor Mahmoud

If your company has blocked the use of Zoom, you can watch the whole event from this website. Buttons for both of these will appear under the video streams.
The best thing you can do to ensure the highest quality is to make sure you have a great connection to the internet. Ideally the machine should be cabled into the router. Understandably this cannot always be done, in which case Wi-Fi would be needed. The recommended internet speed for HD quality is 3 Mpbs up and down, this can be checked on your machine by going to speedtest and pressing Go. A headset with a microphone would also be ideal to achieve the best audio for the sessions. Please also ensure that all non-essential programs are closed prior to joining the call. This will help reduce the processor and memory usage by the machine and also avoid any notifications from popping up. One final tip would be to ask if members of the household could not be on Netflix, gaming and other internet hungry activities as this will affect the connection as well.

"John Bercow served as the 157th Speaker of the House of Commons, and the first since World War II to keep order in front of four Prime Ministers. John entered Parliament in 1997 as Conservative MP for Buckingham. He was appointed Shadow Chief Treasury then Work and Pensions Secretary, but resigned to support the Labour Government’s policy to allow unmarried gay and heterosexual couples to adopt. He was later asked by Ed Balls to lead a review of children and families affected by speech, language and communication needs – which resulted in millions of additional funding. John took over from Speaker Martin with a mission to “strengthen the backbenches and recognise that Parliament is more than a rubber-stamping operation for the government of the day.” He was re-elected three times. In a stream of tributes on his departure, even critics admitted that he had delivered on the original promise. Speaker Bercow built a reputation as a reformer. On one level he dispensed with knee breeches, silk stockings and buckled court shoes. More significantly he increased the use of ‘Urgent Questions’ requiring Ministers to make 685 statements on pressing issues, extended the time for PMQs, and replaced the shooting range with a nursery. He introduced Barack Obama to address both Houses of Parliament, but opposed an invitation to Donald Trump on grounds of racism and sexism."
Andy is well-known for his famous two-year trip around the world in a school bus fuelled by cooking oil: although he expected it to end in disaster, the journey was a success, which he puts down to the amazing people who he met along the way and helped him in times of need. He has contributed a lot of his time to finding ways for the world to be more sustainable and environmentally-friendly. His trips, including the school bus world tour and a trip to Timbuktu in a lorry powered by chocolate, are his way of raising awareness for his cause. His journeys have been followed by the media and shown on popular news outlets including the BBC, Sky News, India Today, Reuters, The Telegraph and The New Zealand Herald. Before he became an advocate for sustainability and environmentalism, he was a journalist and a TV producer.
Life in Parliament when Delivering Change
Rt. Hon. John Bercow, former Speaker of the House of Commons, will join us to discuss his journey to the Speakership as well as offering us his thoughts about characters in Parliament, both past and present. Additionally, he will outline what he has learnt from working to deliver change in Parliament; change in the Chamber; change across the parliamentary estate and change in reaching out to the country as a whole.
Former journalist Andy Pag tried to turn his love of overland travel green by driving around the world powered by used cooking oil scavenged along the way. To everyone's surprise, not least his, he succeeded. He shares his tales from the greasy road and his experience of managing the tensions sustainable goals create in a fossil fuel world.

Whilst the overall outlook for equities is uncertain, a selection of companies listed in the UK have highly attractive long term outlooks, regardless of the particularly challenging economic backdrop at present. The ASI UK Income Equity Fund is focused on high quality companies, which by virtue of their selection have the characteristics that make them resilient in market downturns yet are dialled into structural growth trends that should allow them to deliver attractive, growing income streams into the long term. The Fund benefits from the 16-strong UK Equity team at ASI, which provides full research coverage of the FTSE 350, with ESG deeply integrated into the investment analysis, enabling the identification of attractive opportunities that are under-appreciated by the market.
Exploring the dividend landscape post COVID-19, the relevance of high quality companies to income investors, and the stock specific opportunities identified by our UK equity team’s full FTSE 350 coverage.

As Chris’s presentation will demonstrate, the Antero Peak Group has generated robust near and longer-term results, while maintaining lower volatility than the broad market (as measured by the S&P 500).
