Have you had the opportunity to work with any mentors who have influenced your learning and growth?
I am a civil engineering student at the Colorado School of Mines. This is my third internship with Clayco and my second mission critical project.
A confidential data center in Boardman, Oregon.
I have been doing weekly drone flights, running foreman’s meetings, tracking progress, writing RFIs, and reviewing submittals. I am also doing QA/QC walks where we identify issues and take actions to get them corrected.
I love going out in the field and learning about construction from our project team and subcontractors.
I have had the opportunity to work with an amazing team who has influenced my learning and growth in construction as well as my personal development by allowing me to get involved in everything on site and trusting me to take on new tasks.
The main aspect of the construction industry that I find fascinating is seeing a building come together over time. For me, it feels rewarding and it’s a great feeling that I want to have for the rest of my career. This internship shaped my perspective out on the field because it changed the way I look at construction. It’s not easy work but I love it.
What aspects of construction do you find most fascinating, and how has your internship shaped your perspective on this field?
My favorite part of this internship is learning more about the industry firsthand. Being on site every day and watching the tower go up is truly amazing and is fascinating to me.
Favorite part of your internship?
Some specific projects or tasks that I have been apart of include the submitting RFI’s and Submittals, Laser Scanning the most current active deck, taking 360° photos, being a part of subcontractor coordination meetings as well as plenty of other ones, and creating different types of tracking logs for various scopes of work.
What is your role on the project?

What project are you at this summer?

I think to be successful in this profession, first and foremost, you need to have a desire and eagerness to learn and grow as an individual. As with life, you reap what you sow. So don’t be satisfied with the bare minimum and take time to learn from a diverse group of individuals. And last but not least, have a sense of humor. Working in construction without a sense of humor is like being an accountant that’s bad at math.
In your opinion, what are the most critical skills that an aspiring construction professional should possess?
My favorite part of the internship has been not having to share a room with my younger brother. My first night in my apartment I was worried I’d get lost in the king size bed being so used to my childhood bunkbeds.
Favorite part of your internship?
I am actively running the morning foreman’s meeting, and leading stretch and flex and toolbox talks. Most of my day involves reviewing various BIM concrete checklists, site coordination and stepping in to help subcontractors. Finally, I make it a point to work hands on as much as possible with different trades to solidify my understanding of applying things in paper to the field.
What is your role on the project?

I am extremely grateful for the mentors I have worked with throughout my internship. Not only have they helped me learn software applications and how to work with other’s code, but they have also taught me problem-solving and interpersonal skills. They have been so kind in building my career from the ground up; from reaching out to graphic designers to build my UI experience to treating me as an App Dev team member.
Have you had the opportunity to work with any mentors who have influenced your learning and growth? If so, how have they impacted your development?
My favorite part of the internship so far is how much I’m learning. I love that I am treated like an employee instead of just an intern. Working on a team has also greatly increased my interest in the field. I’ve seen myself grow as a team player as I’ve had the opportunity to talk to my co-workers about their work and impact in the field.
Favorite part of your internship?
This year, I’m helping develop projects such as the PTSA form, which is a form that evaluates safety on the construction field. Another app I’ve worked on is the WorkSafe app. I’ve been working on app functionality as well as UI design on these projects.
Another project I was involved in this year was working in the Dream Big Camp with other interns. We got the opportunity to present a fun and interactive lesson on technology to high school students.
What is your role on the project?
I am currently working with the App Development team in Saint Louis, Missouri to develop apps such as the PTSA form and WorkSafe app.

Looking ahead, I would like to gain experience in the design processes within construction; ideally, I would like to focus on residential and commercial projects.
Overall, my internship with Clayco this summer has been incredibly enriching and has given me a better understanding of the construction industry!
How do you envision your future in construction? Are there any specific areas or specialties within the field that you're interested in pursuing?
My favorite part of the internship has been witnessing the progression of the structure throughout the summer, as well as understanding the daily operations in and out of the office.
Favorite part of your internship?
During the last two months, I have come to fully understand this project by going through drawings, sitting in meetings, and submitting important documentation. Being onsite has allowed me to fully immerse myself into the project, as well as work closely with all parties involved in this joint venture. Some of the main tasks I have been given are reviewing RFI’s and submittals, as well as doing quantity takeoffs.

My internship experience has helped me a lot. I have learned that communication and teamwork is very important when it comes to problem solving in construction. Everyday a new issue presents itself learning how to communicate with people and picking their brains for knowledge about different things has helped me over the course of my internship.
How has your internship experience helped you develop your skills?
My favorite part of the internship has been getting the field experience and building relationships with my project team. I have gained a lot of knowledge from my project and also from the workers’ out in the field.
Favorite part of your internship?
I have been blessed to do everything that is needed to be done from leading foreman’s meetings, Sub Contractor meetings, Toolbox talks, Leading Stretch and Flex, and Tracking down onboarding documents from new sub-contractors who are coming on site to work. This has been a surreal experience getting assigned these tasks.

How do you envision your future in construction? Are there any specific areas or specialties within the field that you're interested in pursuing?
My favorite part of this internship is getting to see these two phases of construction happen at the same time. We are currently wrapping up work on phase 2B of the renovation which means there’s a lot of finish work happening and furniture getting delivered. However, phase 2C is just starting up, so the main thing happening on that part of the jobsite is abatement and demo. It’s been extremely beneficial to see both of these phases happen because I’ve been exposed to more of the construction process.
Favorite part of your internship?
I have personally been tasked with working on punchlist, doing concrete checklists, and doing FCU checklists. I assign the punchlist items to the respective subcontractors based on their scopes of work and check on the status of these items so that when they are ready to be reviewed we can assign it back to the architect. In terms of the concrete checklist, I typically go out every morning to take pictures of the formwork and ask our concrete guys what the plan for the pour is that day before the concrete truck arrives on site. I ensure that the expansion joints are placed properly, the right mix is being delivered, and that everything matches the drawings. Finally, with the fan coil unit checklists, I check a few rooms on each floor of our buildings as well as corridors and lantern rooms to ensure that everything is properly installed.
What is your role on the project?
This summer I’m working on the Penn State East Halls Renovation in State College, PA. This project is a bit unique because it’s broken up into phases and we are currently working on two at the same time. The project team is also great because everyone has a different background in the this industry and it’s been nice to learn from so many of them.

The ability to be personable just being able to relate to the workers and understand what it takes to do that amount of manual labor. In my field specifically learning their job helps me to learn the dangers of the job and that also helps me learn how to keep them safe.
In your opinion, what are the most critical skills that an aspiring construction professional should possess?
My Favorite part of my internship is being able obtain person to person connections with the guys in the field. I have a chance to see their skills and how they perform their tasks.
