What is an accomplishment, milestone or obstacle tht influenced you in your career?
Project Development Manager, Clayco
15 Years of Experience
Three years ago I was assigned as a Project Manager of a
complex project. During its execution, I faced different
personalities, and I was the only woman on the team. At the
start of the project, I felt that every day, there were obstacles
in the coordination with the subcontractors and the owner,
and I did not believe in my own capabilities to sort out all the
challenges that were in front of me. I do not want to create a general statement: it was part of my personality, (and it has been told that women, in general) to worry about others and yield to others before reinforcing my opinions and decisions. After many weeks of struggle and with the right mentoring from supervisors who knew my potential, I discovered how I could handle everything and much more than that. I became a great example of execution, not only in the field and with the relationship with the client but also in the management of the project in terms of finance and scheduling. This led me to learn more about leadership and types of leadership, as well as improve my weaknesses in negotiation. I am not saying I am bulletproof now, but at least I am aware that nothing is as bad as you think it is and that you have to nourish your weakness, not only your strengths, especially if you want to continue progressing on your career path.
