Hispanic Heritage Month reminds me to make the time to recognize the significant and inspirational achievements and contributions of Hispanics to making the United States a great country, including contributions in music, the arts, food, family culture, sports and business. There isn’t an industry in which Hispanic Americans haven’t made their mark.

Did you know that Latino Americans make up over a third of the workers in the construction industry? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Hispanics are projected to account for 78% of net new workers between 2020 and 2030. For this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, I would like to honor all who have supported and welcomed Latinos into our country and industry! With the current workforce shortage in our line of work, we need to advocate for and reassure Latinos coming into our industry, especially the first generations. Without them, we will be unable to keep up with current and future demand. As a first-generation child of parents from Mexico, husband to a wife of 22 years, also born and raised in Mexico, and father to four beautiful Latinas, I can attest that the opportunity to succeed is here if they are given it.

Reflecting on my Latino culture for Hispanic Heritage Month I feel two things: Gratitude for the familial culture that supported me to be who and where I am today and Pride in representing as a first generation Mexican American in an industry I grew up so close with. So, this month as I start my days with my cafécito like any other month, I’ll be listening to Esta Vida by Jorge Celedon and continue reflecting on my Latino culture and the impact we have on this country with nothing but gratitude and pride.
– Francisco Zepeda
Hispanic heritage month is a time to celebrate my culture! A time to recognize the presence of the Latinx culture in our society. This could be in music, sports, our delicious food, the workforce, and much more! Most importantly to me is to be aware and remember the sacrifices my parents made for me and my siblings. It is a reminder to be thankful of the education and job opportunities, el apoyo familiar (family support), and resources I have had along the way. But to never forget where I came from!
