Cloudera Enterprise Data Maturity Research Report
Cloudera, in association with technology market research expert, Vanson Bourne, explored the correlation between the maturity of an organization’s enterprise data strategy and its business performance in a 2021 survey of 2,100 IT decision makers (ITDMs) and 1,050 senior business decision makers (SDMs) in businesses with more than 1,000 employees across a variety of industries.
An enterprise data strategy is a holistic strategy across all lines of business within an organization to extract, consolidate, and manage the data generated across functions for use as an asset.
More than half of the organizations surveyed have an enterprise data strategy in place, and those that do not currently, plan to in the future. Having a roadmap in place to prioritize a data strategy is crucial given:

Organizations with more mature enterprise data strategies report greater positive impacts
1
Organizations see the value in enterprise data strategies, and the longer an organization has a strategy in place, the more they report it as “very effective.”
Question: To what extent do you believe your organization’s current enterprise data strategy is effective?

Organizations with enterprise data strategies in place for more than a year report higher profit growth compared with those with more recent data strategies. Comparatively, organizations without enterprise data strategies in place are falling behind. This shows that implementing an enterprise data strategy, and implementing it well, brings about greater profits for the business.
“The way in which data is handled and managed within my organization has positively impacted its performance”
96%
of senior business decision-makers (SDMs) with an enterprise data strategy in place for more than a year report that:
This impact is pronounced among businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Having a mature data strategy has proven essential for businesses to remain resilient in the face of the pandemic. 64% of organizations with mature enterprise data strategies have coped very well, in contrast to 30% with strategies in place for less than a year and 16% with no enterprise data strategy in place yet.
Business resilience can largely be attributed to the ability of enterprise data strategies to mitigate risks. This is a consensus held by 91% of ITDMs whose organizations have an enterprise data strategy in place as they agree that their current strategy has been key to their resiliency.
Data lifecycle challenges
hinder innovation
2
While organizations engage with several stages of the data lifecycle, only 12% of surveyed ITDMs report that their organizations interact with all stages of the lifecycle process. And although having secure, centralized governance and compliance over the entire data lifecycle is valuable, only 62% of ITDMs report that their organizations’ data lifecycle processes involve security and governance.
Without full control and visibility over every aspect of data, organizations will lack the capabilities required to drive innovation.

Question: What does your organization’s data lifecycle process currently involve?
12
%
Only 12% of ITDMs report their organization interacts with all stages of the data lifecycle process.
There is an anticipated shift to hybrid cloud in the next 18 months. 85% of ITDMs report either increasing or maintaining the same level of investment in hybrid-cloud infrastructure and data and analytics solutions. Furthermore, organizations are dedicating time and resources to cloud migration and strategy (42%) as well as data management (38%) in preparation of a migration strategy to hybrid multi-cloud.

Utilizing data and analytics can yield more benefits than simply increasing profit margins or gaining a competitive advantage, especially in areas such as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). 95% of both ITDMs and SDMs agree that DEI initiatives contribute to an organization’s success.
96% of ITDMs and 95% of SDMs believe that data and analytics is important to ensuring successful and effective DEI Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The majority of organizations (89%) have DEI initiatives in place, with around half of organizations having had these in place for more than a year. Digital leaders are the most likely to currently have such initiatives in place.
The success of DEI initiatives is
underpinned by data
Although surveyed organizations report a high level of engagement with data and analytics within their organizations, there is room for improvement. The results of this research highlight an urgent need for organizations to adopt an enterprise data strategy, one that lets them harness the power of data for faster speed to insights, regardless of where the data resides. Ultimately, this will increase an organization’s ability to distill critical business insights while creating more room for innovation, competitive differentiation, and cross-functional collaboration.
