The promise of robot vacuums has always been to remove an unloved task from our lives. Finally, technology is doing our chores for us! It’s the brave future we’ve always imagined! But in reality, they just ended up replacing one chore with some new ones. Now there’s getting the robot vacuum unstuck from the corner, cleaning up the spots and room edges the robot vacuum missed, and getting the robot vacuum to clean where you want it to. First we don’t get jetpacks and now this?
It turns out, replacing the skills humans bring to the table in the Sentient Being-Household Appliance relationship takes some serious engineering. Until now, the technology hadn’t caught up to the promise of the idea. But the new Dyson 360 Vis Nav has taken the concept of the robot vacuum and developed the technology necessary to finally allow it to just work.
The famously engineering-obsessed Dyson set out to make a vacuum first and a robot second. After all, no matter how impressive the robot part of your robot vacuum is, if it does a lousy job of, you know, cleaning, it’s not really that impressive.
Dyson’s engineers did this by first designing a Hyperdymium motor for the 360 Vis Nav that spins at up to a blistering 110,000 rpm.
On the Cutting Edge of Cleaning
“At 65 air watts, it’s the most powerful robot vacuum out there.”
John Ord, Dyson Senior Design Manager
Now, you can have all the power in the world, but if you don’t know how to use it, it’s just a waste. To that end, the robot uses a piezo sensor to monitor dust levels 15,000 times a second, detecting microscopic particles that are invisible to the naked eye.
“We’re using that sensor to detect the dirt as the robot goes over it,” says Ord. “It’ll ramp up its vacuum power to that 65 air watts where it detects dirt and then ramp back down again. So we’re using that power really intelligently to target where you need it: where the dirt is.” This efficiency allows for better cleaning in less time using less energy.
And when the 360 Vis Nav finds said dirt in edges and corners, it has a clever system to get those tricky areas clean the first time. Most robot vacuums use small sweepers to try to coax dirt into the center of the vacuum, where the suction is. “What we’ve found is they tend to flick dirt and debris around” instead, says Ord.
So the 360 Vis Nav maps all of the edges and corners in a room, cleans within the open areas, then heads to the walls and opens its side-edge actuator. Once that happens, the full force of that powerful suction is routed to the side, easily sucking up all the dirt it finds.
But just how does the 360 Vis Nav map those room edges and corners? By using its innovative SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) system. An advanced onboard 360 eye camera uses a fisheye lens equipped with infrared lights to get a panoramic view of the home. It can then identify features in the environment, such as walls or the edges and corners of furniture, and actively interpret its surroundings.
Combining this data with data from the built-in accelerometer and optical flow sensor allows for the 360 Vis Nav to accurately ascertain where it is, where it should go, and what it should avoid.
And there’s no need to worry about a high-tech camera capturing an ankle-eye view of everything going on in your home; Dyson takes data privacy extremely seriously. “Images from that camera never leave the robot,” says Ord. Even on the robot, images are stored only temporarily. As Ord explains, “It extracts the features from those images and then it gets rid of those images as soon as it’s done that.” So what happens in your home stays in your home.
A Robot Vacuum With Vision
All of the tech on the 360 Vis Nav is great in theory, but it becomes real on the MyDyson™ app. You can see the maps of your home created by the SLAM system and then designate cleaning zones and no-go areas within it. You can then set a schedule that works for you, having it automatically clean where and when is convenient for you.
Using the data gathered by the robot, you can then review exactly how and where each clean happens, how long it took, and how many charges were necessary to get it done. Thanks to the piezo sensor, you can even see a heatmap of dust accumulation in your home right in the app. Knowing exactly what areas tend to attract dirt allows you to program the robot to clean where it’s needed most, leaving less trafficked and cleaner areas for another day.
This is where the promise of the future feels finally achieved—where you’re able to trust that your robot vacuum knows where it is, where it’s going, and exactly what you’d like it to do. And above all, that it’ll do an amazing job at it’s main purpose: cleaning. Then you find yourself with a home that’s cleaner than it was when you were vacuuming it yourself, all managed from the phone in your pocket. Not a bad future.
Now, about those jetpacks…

Piezo sensor
Detects and reacts to changes in dust levels. In Auto mode, a piezo sensor monitors dust levels 15,000 times a second to detect invisible particles invisible to the human eye, automatically increasing suction power where needed.
360° vision system
Remembers where it’s been and sees where to clean. Its high-level processor rapidly maps and remembers where it’s been. 26 sensors ensure obstacle avoidance.
Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor
Spins at up to 110,000rpm to deliver the most powerful suction of any robot. Ten cyclones create forces of 100,000g to capture dust from the airflow, so there’s no loss of suction as the robot cleans.
Edge cleaning
Automatically cleans edges and corners. One of the biggest challenges for any robot. Solved. Sensors detect the edges of a room to redirect suction through a side-actuator. The D-shaped body and full-width front-mounted brush bar help it reach into corners.
Clean. Wherever you are.
Control, customize and schedule remotely with the MyDyson app. Clean your home, whether you’re there or not. Up to 65 minutes of run time before automatically recharging, ready to clean again.
Create and customize zones
Define zones in your home and choose how and when your robot cleans. Set rules and routines. Switch off the brush bar motor for quiet spaces and deep-pile rugs, define no-climb zones, or set areas to avoid altogether.
Gets where it needs to clean
Reaches where you can’t. A low profile allows the robot to clean under furniture, while an LED light ring helps it navigate in low light and corners. Advanced dual-link suspension maintains traction, allowing the robot to climb steps up to 2.1cm.
Pet-friendly cleaning
Wide diameter brush bar is engineered to reduce tangling. HEPA Filtration captures particles the size of pet dander. It also features a Quiet mode for pet-friendly cleaning.
Four cleaning modes
Auto mode to analyze dust levels and automatically optimize suction power; Quick mode to top-up cleaning for open areas; Quiet mode for quieter cleans and longer run time; and Boost mode for maximum suction and a deeper clean.
