Clothing is key to self-expression. With the colder seasons looming, this sentiment is most obviously captured through the last thing you throw on in the morning: outerwear. So in this department, it’s essential that your design of choice is well-crafted, technically advanced and, in order to really spark a conversation, finished with bold, fashion-led details. For a guaranteed delivery of all three, the place to go is Moose Knuckles. Specifically, a piece from its autumn/winter 2021 collection, which sees the Canadian brand venturing into its most innovative designs yet.

Long known for its luxury outerwear, Moose Knuckles has taken its practical reputation to another planet for the season ahead. Literally – via enhanced fabrication, enhanced technicality and an enhanced visual campaign to swiftly elevate the advancement of the collection. Shot by photographer David LaChapelle, it features models Adwoa Aboah, Emily Ratajkowski and comedian Pete Davidson, AKA: the ultimate trio of socially conscious voices in their respective fields. Styled in bright pieces from the collection, they navigate their way through a surrealist (yet seasonally apt) environment, testing the strength of their utility-wear with a sense of fun and absurdity. Naturally, they also look good in the process.
Aside from the style and function, the main thing to note from this collection is its versatility. First and foremost, these pieces are designed to accommodate natural landscapes and colder seasons (the brand does have a Canadian heritage, after all). But thanks to this new creative direction, they’ll work just as well across the streets of a capital city. Take a puffer jacket as the central statement piece. Layer it over simple statements like slim-fit leggings or, for those in need of some glamour, a satin skirt. By day, you want to base it with leather lace-up boots. And by night, pointed stilettos.
It’s a smart way of establishing Moose Knuckles’s current identity, mostly because it captures the bold reconstruction of the brand under creative director Brody Baker. With a goal to minimise weight and permeability, the priority of a Moose Knuckles piece is warmth and mobility, but under Baker’s visual direction, this hi-tech clothing now looks trendy, too. This, you can see through the Comptoir and Gataga Puffer jackets worn by Ratajkowski and Aboah in the campaign. The first has been modernised by the brand through a refined – and very flattering – fit, along with patch detailing, touches of velvet and shearling trims. The latter, the Gataga style: re-energised through lighter silhouettes in eye-popping prints and based with a futuristic silver thermal lining.

“Utility has a different definition at Moose Knuckles,” asserts creative director Brody Baker. “We know our audience and we know how to make unparalleled outerwear tailored to their needs. They like to have fun, to have a good time, to create. And they don't take days off.” And it’s those fun-loving, restless creatives that are sure to find inspiration in the surreal campaign film Moose Knuckles has created for its most technically, and creatively, advanced collection to date.
