As you read this, most likely in the same hoodie that’s been regular attire for more months than you’d care to admit, we can all agree it’s time for something new. Perhaps not a complete closet overhaul, rather a sweetener to smooth the transition out of loungewear. Enter UNIQLO's latest +J collection from Jil Sander.
After a successful revival last year, the queen of minimalist fashion is back in collaboration with the Japanese brand just in time for spring to save us all with a collection of the covetable pieces we’ve come to expect. Cool and refined, it’s the effortless refresh we’ve been craving to lift the mood in time for a brighter season ahead.
All the +J hallmarks remain intact: clean-lined silhouettes, roomy cuts and a subtle, versatile palette that encompasses monochrome and grey, through inky indigo, khaki and caramel. In short, it plays to the advantages that both parties are best known for, and those that remember autumn/winter 2020 are well acquainted with. So, what’s new?
Sander has designed +J spring/summer 2021 the energy and lightness of the season ahead, not to mention the positive frame of mind required to approach the transition back to real life again – something you can really feel running through each piece. Each is crafted to emanate quality – think simple foundation pieces that are a joy to wear.
The +J Hybrid Down Coat from the autumn/winter 2020 was a piece every fashion editor sought out for winter warmth. Behold, the spring edition – hooded and sculpted for a full, voluminous statement.
Let’s be clear, this is not an outfit to run a marathon in. But as a low-key athleisure look, it will do nicely. The cuts are streamlined, airy and comfortable – practical enough to take you from a light home workout directly to the coffee shop.
Consider this your modern uniform, where dressing from the waist up is what matters. This season serves smart-casual in the form of the sculpted blouse, boxy collarless shirt, short-sleeved A-line tops and loose-fitting super-light cotton T-shirts. Your colleagues will appreciate the on-screen style switch-up.
Whether you’ve got a patch of urban roof terrace or have relocated to the countryside, that first glimpse of spring sun will feel equally therapeutic – dress accordingly. The linen-cotton wrap skirt is a literal breeze to wear, while the pleated cotton dress provides one effortless piece required in every wardrobe.
Debuting for the first time in any +J collection, allow us to introduce Sander’s take on selvedge jeans. Produced on classic shuttle looms, selvedge denim has a tightly woven texture that holds its shape particularly well. “Selvedge jeans, if all the details are right, can be collector’s pieces,” Sander promises. Your search for the perfect jean stops here.
