In Spartanburg, we have recently leased an additional warehouse on Broadcast Road to store our raw materials. We are in the process of adding five new production lines at Wingo Park for our professional cleaning business. An automated wiper production line and new cleanroom laundry are also being installed to support our cleanroom and healthcare business units. In addition, we have completed our second solar panel installation at Wingo Park which continues to drive our efforts to reduce our overall carbon footprint.
We are nearly finished with the expansion of the facility in Suzhou which almost doubles the size of our factory there. The expansion is primarily for warehousing raw materials and finished product.

Contec United Kingdom:
The UK has been especially hard hit by Covid and continues to implement tight controls around travel and public gatherings. Although the country's initial response to the pandemic caused much chaos and confusion, its vaccination efforts have been another story. The British government took a calculated risk and bought millions of vaccine doses before the drugs were even approved. This risk is proving to be successful: almost everyone over the age of 70 has been vaccinated, and they are on track to offer vaccines to everyone 50 and above by May. The high percentage of vaccinated citizens is the result of local authorities conducting door-to-door campaigns focused on immunization safety and effectiveness education.
Like the rest of Europe, France has seen a strong second wave of the virus. Unfortunately, like other countries on the European continent, the French government was not as proactive in purchasing vaccines, so our associates in France will be waiting significantly longer to get vaccinated.
In Suzhou our Chinese associates recently celebrated Chinese New Year, which is based on the lunar calendar. The year of the Metal Ox arrived on February 12th with quieter fanfare than previous years. Citizens usuually enjoy visiting family and friends during the weeks of the holiday. This year, to help prevent the spread of Covid, the Chinese government incentivized both employers and employees to avoid traveling. This meant many of our chinese associates rang in the New Year using video chats, social media, and other contacteless communication tools in order to stay safe and healthy.
Q1: What was the biggest challenge of 2020 and how were you able to overcome it?
A: My biggest challenge was adapting to working from home, especially during the three-month quarantine period. I missed being in our facilities and just getting to see and talk with other team members. Zoom and Teams calls have their place, but there is nothing like being face-to-face with teammates to get things done and to make work satisfying. Getting back in the office helped that, but I am looking forward to when we can ALL be back!
Q2. What made you most proud about being the CEO of Contec during 2020?
A: I have never been more proud of our company than in 2020. The huge increase in demand for our products caused stress in every area of the company and everyone rose to the challenge. Manufacturing and operations kicked out unprecedented amounts of product, our sales teams were proactive in working with our customers on the allocation system we put in place, and our HR and marketing teams developed the protocols and messaging to keep everyone safe in the workplace. Mostly, I have to thank our manufacturing associates for coming to work and staying safe (both from Covid and from accidents in the workplace), especially during the early days when there were so many questions about the transmissibility and severity of Covid.
Q3. What are the company’s biggest strengths right now?
A: Our biggest strength continues to be the amazing team we have built here at Contec. We are now recognized as a world-class manufacturer, an innovation engine, and the industry leader in each of our business units. This requires a top to bottom team of talented and dedicated people whose work is guided by our core values and the Contec culture we have created around the world.
Q4. What excites you most about 2021?
A: What excites me most about 2021 is the realization of all the investments we’ve made and continue to make to increase capacity around the world. Contec has become a trusted brand in all our markets and with these investments we are positioned to achieve the growth goals we’ve set for our future.
Q5. Are you planning on getting vaccinated? Why?
A: I was very fortunate to be able to get my first vaccination (Pfizer) on February 25th and am excited to get the second shot. My main reason for getting it is that given the uncertainty around how Covid manifests in different people, I don’t want to get sick. More importantly, I believe getting everyone vaccinated is the safest and fastest way to get the world back to something approaching normal. I miss hugs and handshakes!!
