In the 1920s, the state of Florida planted thousands of Australian pine trees on both sides of the newly opened State Road A1A to address the high winds along its coastal right-of-way from Jacksonville to Miami. Today, a lush two-mile stretch in the town of Gulf Stream holds the last remaining canopy of these pines, earning it state protection as a historic and scenic roadway.
That’s hardly the only vestige of Old Florida in Gulf Stream, a storied community that became a major destination for polo and golf and offers easy proximity to the shops and restaurants of nearby Delray Beach and Palm Beach. This South Florida community, named for the warm Atlantic Ocean current just offshore, is mostly known for its lavish grand-scale homes on white sand beaches — along with the space and privacy that comes with them.
3603 North Ocean Boulevard, a trophy oceanfront designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill alum Randall Stofft, is one such residence. Tucked behind private gates and on a spacious and elevated 0.63-acre lot, the 6,797-square-foot home offers four bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and one partial bath. Built in 2000, the revivalist-style home still feels stylish and utterly timeless. It’s both elegant and super-comfortable, not to mention it’s sited directly on the most sought-after stretch of beach in town.
Amenities include an infinity-style, beach-facing pool and spa, a cozy home theater, a gym, a three-car garage, a whole-house generator, a home office with handsome built-in bookcases, an elevator, multiple balconies, and an in-home water purification system. Two toasty fireplaces offer respite from those odd-but-it-happens chilly winter nights. The Jerusalem stone terrace, the covered loggia, and the enormous pool deck are an entertainer’s dream.
The solid mahogany front door sets the stage for what you’ll find inside. Classic architectural details include a gracious open living room, a formal dining room, maple and mahogany floors, high ceilings, ironwork, and arched windows and doorways. Just about every room has deep-blue ocean vistas, and the windows are big and bold to frame those views just right.
The windowed chef's kitchen offers a center island, tons of storage, a Garland six-burner stove (again, classic), a grill, a salamander, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The adjoining breakfast room has windows with big ocean views and double doors that open to the back yard and pool area. The light-filled upstairs primary bedroom suite features sublime ocean views, a private oceanfront balcony, dual walk-in closets, a fireplace and a large bathroom with a soaking tub, and a separate shower.
The elevated house is quite private, set well back from the road and surrounded by gardens and lush tropical landscaping. Out back, a Hamptons-style hedgerow creates an added cone of buffer between the home and nearby beachgoers.
