The Pinnacle
Even by its creator's measure, The Chatham, soaring at 181 East 65th Street, reaches the zenith of timeless elegance.
That's no small statement, considering it was designed by Robert A.M. Stern—the legendary Yale Architecture dean and driving force behind some of the nation's most impressive and inventive constructions, including a coterie of coveted condominums that have grown synonomous with record-shattering sales.
Consider also that it's the commission Stern chose for his own primary New York residence, which joins 92 others in the Georgian-inspired tower.
The building, while a 21st century development, was crafted to pre-war specifications, with generous and sturdy brick, limestone, and plaster construction.

The crown jewel of The Chatham—designed by Robert A.M. Stern—is a sight to behold.
It's at the top of The Chatham, however, that the commitment to perfect livable spaces is most in evidence. There, in the south-facing penthouse, the project’s developer made his home. Stern, working with the design firm Mojo Stumer Associates, crafted a one-of-a-kind retreat on the top two floors, maximizing the unmatched views of Central Park and the city to the south, east, and west.
It is hard to pick the most stunning feature of this duplex penthouse, but it is not hard to pick the grandest. One step out of the elevator, and the glory of all Manhattan is on view through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 22-foot-tall formal dining room (and yes, those windows are high-efficiency imports from the Netherlands). Two huge terraces are adjacent, one facing southwest to a grand overlook of Central Park and the city, and the other looking southeast towards the river and the rising sun. To the west of the dining room, there’s a sculptural staircase of walnut and stainless steel that serves as an interior focal point, and leads up to the primary suites with two additional terraces—and even more spectacular views.
The main floor — The Chatham’s 31st — includes an expansive living room with southwest corner views through more spectacular windows, a gas fireplace and a wet bar for preparing cocktails for the journey through the glass doors to the deck. To the other side of the living room is the library — again with stellar western views. At the opposite end of the floor is a windowed gourmet eat-in (and sun-soaked) kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line appliances including a built-in Miele coffee system, two sinks, and countertops of granite and stainless steel. The adjoining breakfast room opens to the southeast terrace, making that space convenient for outdoor dining, be it casual or elegant. The dining areas are supported by an oversized butler’s pantry with a large laundry room, yet another sink, and additional storage. For guests, there’s a handsome limestone powder room, complete with a shower.
One arrives at the private quarters via that grand staircase, where a balcony gallery offers art in one direction and panoramic city views in the other. One of the lavish corner suites looks through floor-to-ceiling windows to Central Park and the city — views which are also available from its private sunset terrace. That suite features a wood paneled dressing room with custom closets, as well as a generously windowed limestone bathroom with oversized steam shower and a Jacuzzi bathtub with views of the park. A second primary bedroom faces east and south and has yet another a private terrace, plus a large walk-in closet and another limestone bathroom.
A foundation of cutting-edge technology ensures ease of maintenance and optimal comfort. The penthouse is thoroughly state-of-the-art, running its own Nest-controlled HVAC separate from the building’s system, as well as a Sonos music system and Crestron Total Home installation that controls the Lutron lighting and motorized window treatments. The building has a full-time doorman and concierge, a residents-only fitness center, and an on-site parking garage.
It's a singular opportunity to acquire a masterwork by one of the world's most celebrated living architects.
A gas fireplace framed with rough Jerusalem limestone anchors the living room,
which also boasts a wet bar and glass doors opening to the southwest terrace.
Upstairs, east and west-facing terraces flank the dual primary suites.
