A Queen Anne Charmer-on-Hudson
The stretch of North Broadway in Upper Nyack that runs north along the Hudson River up toward Hook Mountain is justly famous for its high-end historic homes with commanding river views. On the river side of the street, some of the properties have generous lawns that tumble all the way down to the river’s edge, with easy access to the water and perhaps even a beach of sorts.

This fully renovated 1887 home in Rockland County offers a private beach,
easy water access, and loads of work-play space.

Art deco ceiling lights, from Manhattan's storied Russian Tea Room, add a touch of whimsy.
For starters, the six-bedroom, four-level house is quite large, with 7,049 square feet of interior space and a crazy-fun exterior mix of turrets, balconies, porches, intricate rooflines and clapboard and brick siding. The park-like grounds are spread across 1.42 acres of prime waterfront property. Exterior amenities include a pergola, a basketball court, a koi pond, an approved pool site, a two-car detached garage (with a Tesla charging station) and a private gated driveway. And check yes to the private beach and full river access.
The vibrantly colorful Queen Anne Victorian at 309 N. Broadway has all of that and more.
The fairytale castle of a house dates to 1887 and is known as the Bennett-Deyrup Estate after previous owners J.A. Bennett, an attorney and politician, and the painter Dorothy Deyrup. It was also the longtime home of Alvin Johnson, who co-founded the New School of Social Research.
The house also boasts eight fireplaces, four with stone mantels and four with original raised Victorian tile work. And the great thing about Upper Nyack is that it’s just 30 minutes north of New York City.
The house recently underwent a two-year $4 million overhaul that brought in modern conveniences like seven heating zones, a new white kitchen with state-of-the art appliances (and original brick walls), a home theater, a rec room and a grand primary bedroom suite with an oversized walk-in closet and a steam shower – and dreamy river views. The thoughtful reno also preserved and enhanced charming architectural details like stained glass windows, wood paneling, high ceilings, pocket doors, hardwood floors, crown moldings and a lazy back porch that faces out to the river.
