Crime increase outpaces ridership
In 2016, after a small decrease, crime on the CTA's rail lines started increasing, but ridership stayed relatively flat, with only a slight decrease before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, ridership has yet to hit pre-pandemic levels, but crime has skyrocketed in comparison to 2014.
