Important Customs updates
June 2024
On 12 September 2024, the UK government released the trade, aircraft and shipping sanctions (civil enforcement) regulations 2024, effective from 10 October 2024. These regulations grant the new Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation (OTSI) enforcement powers to ensure compliance with trade sanctions. Businesses must comply with these regulations to avoid penalties.
New trade sanctions regulation
On 14 October 2024, the UK began negotiations for an enhanced FTA with Switzerland, its 10th largest trading partner and 7th largest export market. This aims to strengthen trade relations, boost economic growth, and create jobs across the UK.
UK and Switzerland Free Trade Agreement (FTA) upgrade
The EU Commission has proposed a 12 month delay for the EUDR, which was supposed to take effect at the end of December 2024. This delay has been approved by the EU Council and now awaits approval from the Parliament.
European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) delayed
The introduction of S&S declarations for EU imports has been postponed to 31 January 2025, instead of the end of October 2024 as initially planned. The government attributes this to communication challenges during the election period.

Reports due in October under EU CBAM must now include actual data, as default values for emissions are no longer acceptable. Reports without actual data will be considered incorrect or incomplete, but potential penalties may be mitigated if the relevant National Competent Authority accepts evidence of efforts made to obtain the data.
