Oticon Decision Guide
"These aren't your grandparents' hearing aids."
Take back control of your hearing health with Oticon More™ hearing aids
"When you lose your sight, you lose seeing things. And when you lose your hearing,
you lose people and that connection."
Sara's story
Testimonial
Sara Levine-Petroff relies on meeting people in all types of social situations. As her tinnitus and hearing loss issues progressed over the years, the Toronto-based artist, curator and interior designer found herself gradually withdrawing from social situations.
When she started wearing Oticon hearing aids, Sara got back more than just her hearing. She reclaimed her outgoing persona and resumed the social interactions from which she had distanced herself.
Before she got her Oticon hearing aids, Sara had thought everyone around her was mumbling all the time. She was missing entire chunks of conversations and was starting to tune out from social situations.
"You know when you leave a concert and it sounds like your underwater? That's what it's like without my hearing aids."
Sara's tinnitus was also causing her considerable anguish at home as well.
"The tinnitus got so loud that I didn't watch television in the evening," says Sara. "I didn't interact with my husband."
"I was tuning out from social interactions."
Life before hearing aids
Sara was originally hesitant to seek out help with her hearing. Her family and friends convinced her it was the right move and that it might help return the enjoyment of her day-to-day life.
After visiting an audiologist for her tinnitus, Sara was diagnosed with hearing loss. It was an easy process after receiving her new Oticon hearing aids.
Sara describes her first experience as overwhelming.
"You don't realize the slow change over time. And when you get it back it's very powerful."
These powerful moments continued as she carried on with her regular routines.
"When I first started to hear birds, I started to cry. I didn't realize that I had not been hearing them."
"You don't realize the slow change over time."
First days with new hearing aids
With her hearing aids, Sara regained so much of what she had lost. She says they have dramatically changed her life and improved her overall mental health.
"I'm constantly taking them out and showing people because I'm actually bragging about them. I love them."
She hopes she can help break the stigma that's associated with hearing aids. They should be viewed the same way glasses and orthotics are – as customizable accessories for improving your health.
"There needs to be a change in how we perceive hearing health."
Sara remembers her grandparents hearing aids as being bulky and awkward, saying they seemed like they would lead to a cumbersome and almost painful experience.
"I remember hearing aids from my grandparents as being very loud. And I remember hearing the feedback.
Sara's experience with her new Oticon hearing aids has been worlds apart from that of older hearing aid technologies. They're fully digital, connected through multiple technologies, and give off none of the feedback that used to plague many hearing aid users.
