Founded in 1857 by brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani, Bertani has been at the forefront of quality and innovation in Italy’s Valpolicella region for more than 150 years. After visiting Burgundy in 1850 and taking inspiration from esteemed French winemaker Jules Guyot, the brothers revolutionised Valpolicella by introducing the first dry wines to a region then dominated by sweet Recioto-style wines.
Secco-Bertani, as the wine was called, paved the way for drier styles: Bertani’s Recioto Secco Amarone, made using the appassimento method, followed nearly a century later. The method was so celebrated that Bertani was awarded a gold medal for its revolutionary winemaking process at the Verona Academy of Agriculture’s 1889 symposium.
Innovation paired with a respect for tradition has always been Bertani’s philosophy. The winery was one of the first in Italy to produce single-estate wines; to this day, it continues to be a leader within both Valpolicella and the wider Italian winemaking landscape. For over a century, its respectful, patient work in both vineyard and cellar has preserved its unmistakable style.

Following a period of renovation, Bertani has re-opened the doors to its historic cellar in Grezzana, Verona, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the winery’s impressive history and trace Bertani’s journey from 1857 up to the present day. Visitors can choose from two paths: Valpolicella Classica and The Library Experience.
The Valpolicella Classica experience includes a guided tour of Bertani’s historic cellar, followed by a tasting of current releases of four of the winery’s most iconic wines:
Valpolicella Classico Le Miniere di Novare, Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ognisanti di Novare, Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Catullo and Amarone della Valpolicella Classico.
Those with a penchant for history can opt for The Library Experience, a rare opportunity to taste wines from some of Bertani’s most historic vintages spanning six decades, from 1967 to 2015. The Library Experience is a special offering for those who are true devotees of the classic wines of Bertani – and it doesn’t stop there.
