ritain’s reputation for excellence in house building goes
back for centuries, from the handsome proportions of the
Georgian era to the splendor of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Today the UK remains at the forefront of architecture and design - with companies like Oakwrights leading the way. The story of Oakwrights is the story of British craftsmanship at its very best, and the company wouldn’t be where it is today without the vision and drive of its founder Tim Crump. Born with a love of the great outdoors, Tim’s early years were spent in North Herefordshire, climbing trees and building dens on a bank above The River Lugg; indeed it was there that his love of working with oak began. After he left school, Tim turned his hobby into a vocation, and began repairing old Herefordshire oak-frame buildings by day and studying their historical design by night.

This year, 2024, sees Oakwrights celebrating 25 years in the business, during which Tim and his team have perfected a wide range of different styles of property from contemporary properties to barns, cottages and more traditional farmhouse designs. He has also expanded the range of extensions which now includes sunrooms, garden rooms, orangeries and conservatories, while the Oakwrights outbuilding range includes garages and annexes, garden barns and bespoke projects.
Custom builds, however, are where the company really comes into its own: clients say they love the company’s ability to think outside-of-the-box while bringing their dreams to life. Combining a client’s vision with decades of experience is second nature at Oakwrights – you can read more about their architectural design process on the website www.oakwrights.co.uk. Those looking for inspiration can also see some fascinating case studies on the site, from a timber-framed extension on a 17th century cottage to a stunning manor house on the Essex/Cambridgeshire border.
Combining a passion for traditional carpentry and modern design excellence, Tim and his team are celebrating 25 years of bringing people’s dreams to life, and looking forward to another quarter century of creating the heritage buildings of the future.
After ten years spent repairing timber-framed buildings, Tim found he had a flair for combining traditional carpentry skills with modern design techniques, and in 1999 he and close friend Nick Price started Oakwrights, offering clients high-end oak-framed extensions, outbuildings and self-build properties.
Growing the company during a boom in self-build was an exhilarating time; it was the heyday of Grand Designs and as Oakwrights expanded and developed it began to grow the scope and finesse of what was possible. Tim quickly developed a reputation as an industry leader, ensuring he worked with the latest technology to develop beautiful buildings, all of which have the unique combination of heritage and sustainability which lies at the heart of every Oakwrights design. And Oakwrights continues to push boundaries today: recent developments have seen the team adopting the most efficient energy-saving insulation materials currently available, and in 2017 building the UK’s first certified oak-framed Passivhaus. A year later, in 2018, Oakwrights launched its Turnkey Service, which fully manages self-builds for clients, as well as an end-to-end service which includes finding a plot and securing planning permissions for clients before a build even begins.
