What is Dengie Meadow Lite with Herbs?
Providing a range of fibre types in the diet is beneficial for gut health, and Dengie Meadow Lite with Herbs contains three types – grass, straw and pea hull fibre.
These fibrous ingredients also increase chew time, causing more saliva production, which helps to buffer acid in the stomach.
“Feeding straw can be particularly beneficial for good-doers”, explains Dr Katie Williams, MSc (Dist) RNutr, Technical & Product Development Manager at
Dengie Horse Feeds.
“Recent studies have shown that using straw as part of the ration – up to 50% – does not increase the risk of gastric ulcers and provides a valuable source of low-calorie fibre,” says Katie, who goes on to explain postbiotics.
“Postbiotics is a recently introduced name to describe inanimate micro-organisms and/or their metabolites that have a health benefit to the animal that consumes them,” Katie explains, comparing it to the benefits of humans consuming fermented foods, such as yoghurt or kefir.
“For horses it is important to use approved sources of postbiotics to ensure that they are safe, efficacious and have a reduced risk of contamination with prohibited substances.”
Benefits of feeding Dengie Meadow Lite with Herbs
This new chopped, high fibre feed is suitable for good-doers and those prone to laminitis as it provides maximum chew time, while remaining low in calories (5MJ/kg). It’s high in fibre, but naturally low in sugar (3%) and starch (0.5%).
It has been formulated with no added vitamins and minerals, which makes it really flexible – it can be fed as part of a bucket feed or as a forage replacer, so you can feed your horse as much or as little as he needs alongside a vitamin and mineral supplement or a balancer to provide a balanced diet.

Case study
“Although Spud is naturally a good-doer,”
says Emily of her 14-year-old cob gelding,
“he is very fussy with his bucket feed and I’ve struggled to find a low-calorie feed that he enjoys. However, Meadow Lite with Herbs
is so soft and tasty; he licks his bowl clean.”
