TO Impress
indow treatments are the unsung hero in any room. Not only do they add a touch of colour or pattern but they are also the key to practical considerations like privacy, light and heat retention. And for Suzie Tipple – lover of social spaces in her home, brimming with
“My younger daughter’s bedroom window is road-facing and we always struggled with privacy issues. It would drive me mad that she would keep her blind down for extended periods and live in the dark,” she recalls. “From a design perspective, I knew a Roman blind would best suit the room but I hadn’t thought about how to resolve the problem of being seen by people on the road below.”
Suzie was overjoyed when a Hillarys advisor came up with a fabulous solution – adding a simple sheer roller blind behind the Roman blind, hidden when rolled up but elegant when down. The light now filters through the blind but completely hides her daughter from view.
energising blues and greens – this hidden value was perhaps the most exciting aspect of her recent home makeover.
“Measuring up windows is such a precise skill, and it’s the part of my work as an interior designer that I dread,” she admits. “Mistakes can be costly and I feel like there’s often a lot of things you don’t realise until you start.”
Despite being adept at helping her clients navigate the nuances of pattern and colour, Suzie felt it was time to call in the experts at Hillarys for a few key projects in her own home.

Bright starts for her daughter
Known for her “House with Blue Shutters”, Suzie and her clients would be lost without an expressive colour palette. And when it came to her older daughter’s room – ready for a grown-up makeover when she left to go travelling – there was no sacrificing personal style.
During a visit from a Hillarys advisor, Suzie was able to pick out the Loxley Emerald Curtains with a “Mineral”-coloured thermal blackout lining. Not only do they keep the room cosy but there is also a selection of lining colours so your curtains can look amazing from the outside too. Adding a Kendra Sage Electric blackout Roman blind beneath has ensured a sound night’s sleep and easy operation when her daughter – now back from her globetrotting adventures – wakes up each morning.
Freedom to choose
In a home with so many unique corners – not to mention beautiful windows that come in all shapes and sizes – it was important to Suzie to call in the experts when considering the time and cost involved in her projects.
“I would be nervous to return to my old ways of buying window dressings,” she says over a cup of tea in the kitchen. “Sourcing fabrics, to have made up according to my calculations, and making guesses as to which mechanism best suits my window feels archaic now.”
All around are busy family spaces, and plenty of natural light. The kitchen diner, with its bi-fold doors, features thermally efficient INTU Micro Hive Blinds in white with a perfect crisp, clean look. Layered over the top is the Echo Silver Voile Curtain, so Suzie and her family can effortlessly filter the rays of autumn sunshine throughout the day.
Around the other side is a cosy corner with armchairs – almost like a snug – and a great spot to retreat to with a good book. The space features a Sustainable Choice Roman Blind, motorised for ease of use – and there’s the option to make these solar-powered too.
All of which is ideal for Suzie, now that Hillarys has taken away the stress of her projects and given her more time back for herself.

Choosing a complete service means you benefit from a sense of relief knowing that you don’t have to spend hours searching to find a solution, only to find out it might not even be suitable for your own home once it comes to the fitting stage.
“The complete service offered by Hillarys suits me very well and I am reassured that every step of the process is overseen by a professional,” says Suzie. “I am always comfortable recommending Hillarys to my clients because I know that they will be getting an excellent product. As an interior designer, I recognise the superior quality of the Hillarys products, which feel and look high quality.”
And having turned to the experts, she’s even solved another dilemma: “I can now open my daughter’s blinds remotely – which resolves the age-old problem known to all mums as to how to wake up teenagers each day. I just use my smartphone, it’s genius.”
