How to build a cosy, Scandi-inspired living space this winter
The latest seasonal range from M&S Home is the cosiest of edits.

As the dark, cold days of winter approach, our minds are increasingly looking for ways to make our homes cosy and comfortable in preparation for the coming season.
A natural starting place for wintry interior design inspiration is the Scandinavians. After all, if anybody knows how to create cosy but sleek living spaces to escape from the elements it's the Scandis. Cosy and Scandi are two themes that have been truly mastered in the new home living range by British high street stalwarts M&S Home. Here we take a look around this cosiest of edits with some styling tips from Alex Stedman, founder of award-winning lifestyle platform The Frugality, to help make your home a warmand comforting space to while away your winter days.
Inject some earthy tones
Scandi style is all about minimal design and a monochrome colour palette. The new Scandi-inspired M&S Home range, however, has subtly updated the look for this winter. ‘When we think of Scandinavians we tend to think minimal and monochrome, however it's easy to inject some colour to make it even cosier,’ says Stedman.

A key trend at the moment is to think about lighting objects in individual spaces rather than whole rooms.

Now we’re not talking about anything too bright or outrageous here. Instead think warm soft tones like peach or earthy shades like terracotta and honey, paired with a crisp white or inky black. Stedman recommends saving these ever-so-slightly bolder shades for a statement piece of furniture, or something simple like this Sheepskin Cushion (£39.50). With a soft long pile on one side and a smooth fabric finish on the reverse, it's perfect for turning your sofa or bed into a cosy retreat.
Perfect the art of bed layering
Speaking of beds, crisp white sheets are Scandi-style 101 and will never go out of fashion. Alex says to ‘try layering your bed, blankets, and decorative cushions, for extra comfort and warmth.’ It’s one of the easiest and quickest ways to transform your bedroom look.
This Satin Quilted Throw (£39.50) will elevate your bed linen to a new luxe level by bringing texture and understated pattern to your bedroom setup. Neatly place it over the top of a bed made up with this Body Temperature Control linen which is made with some nifty Body Sensor™ technology that keeps you cosy when it's cold in winter, and cool when it goes back into the warmer summer months.
Create a relaxing glow
‘A key trend at the moment is to think about lighting objects in individual spaces rather than whole rooms,’ says Alex. ‘Beautiful lamps create a cosy yet functional spot to curl up with a blanket and a good book, while lighting candles gives a wonderful warm glow.’

The M&S Home cosy shop edit has a number of wonderfully fragrant and seasonal candles to choose from, including this Meditate Scented Candle (£8.00) with a soothing mix of black pepper, mandarin, cypress and cedarwood essential oils. ‘By sticking to a neutral colour palette, and then adding textures and lighting, you can create your very own Scandi retreat this winter,’ says Alex.
Go for well-made timeless pieces
While the word trend might imply something that’s in today, gone tomorrow, Scandi style is about much more than that. In fact, simple, stylish and well-made furniture that will last you for years to come are central to Scandi interiors.
Think bedside tables and matching chests of drawers in blond-wood finishes, a style that Alex loves for a restful bedroom. M&S Home is the perfect spot for picking up these quality, well-made pieces at an affordable price, and thanks to the new edit, the place to go to cosy up your home this winter.
