Interior design Rebecca Constable explains how to bring wellness seamlessly into your daily routine
that keeps surfaces clutter-free, the small details matter and can genuinely change how you feel. Take time to create a bathroom that will improve your sense of wellbeing, and elevate your daily rituals. Interior designer and Open House columnist Rebecca Constable says: ‘As an interior designer, I’m always thinking about how a space makes you feel, not just how it looks. And in a bathroom especially, the best spaces are the ones that feel practical, calm and easy to live with everyday.”
rom invigorating wake-ups to soothing evening wind-downs, your bathroom is the one room where you start and end every single day, making it far more than just a practical space. A thoughtfully-designed bathroom can shape the mood of your mornings, ease the stress of busy routines and create a calming sanctuary before bedtime. Whether it’s layered lighting, tactile tiles or clever storage

Turn your bathroom into a sanctuary that gives your body and mind a daily reset
Getting the basics right in your bathroom design will set you up for success. ‘Layout is always the first thing I look at,’ says Rebecca. ‘If the room flows well, it instantly feels calmer.’ Think about how you’ll move through the space, ensuring there’s enough room to transition comfortably between key areas such as the shower, basin and toilet. Sightlines are another key consideration. Positioning the bath or vanity as a focal point, while keeping elements such as your loo discreet, allows the room to feel more like a calming retreat than just a practical space.
Storage should always be factored in from the start. Built-in cupboards and niches help maintain a clutter-free look that instantly feels more serene.
Nail the layout
It’s all in the detail
Bathrooms can be challenging spaces to get right, particularly where space is at a premium, but Rebecca knows exactly how to maximise what you have. Tricks she has up her sleeve as an interior designer include opting for larger format tiles which create a cleaner, less interrupted visual flow and give the illusion of space. Using the same tiles across both the floors and walls helps to blur the room’s boundaries, enhancing the sense of openness.
Lighter tones and softly textured finishes reflect light around the space and make it instantly look more welcoming. Finally, the materials you choose matter; for a restful spa-like atmosphere, you can’t beat natural textures and warm neutrals that feel harmonious and grounding rather than overly busy.
Play with the senses
‘For me, the best bathrooms appeal to all the senses,’ says Rebecca. ‘So that’s the sound of the water, the quality of the light, the textures, the warmth – all of that shapes how the room makes you feel.’ Layered lighting, including soft ambient options and focused task lighting around mirrors, creates a more relaxing atmosphere throughout the day.
Your shower is far more than a functional part of the bathroom. I love that the Mira Activate includes features like rainfall shower heads, wake up or evening wind-down routines and even guided cold water experiences. These all help to create a spa-like experience that encourages relaxation and well-being in the comfort of your own home'. The health benefits of cold plunges are becoming more recognised, as we gain a better understanding of the effect water temperature can have on physical and mental wellbeing and your daily shower is an opportunity to reset, recharge or unwind. Whether you embrace warm water or a refreshing cold finish, both have been shown to support muscle relaxation, ease tension, and promote a sense of calm - ultimately encouraging better sleep or invigorating your day'
Is your bathroom setting the tone for how you want to start and end your day? ‘In the morning, it needs to feel practical, organised and calm, even in the middle of the rush. By the evening it should help you slow down and reset,’ says Rebecca. ‘That’s the balance I’m always trying to create through my designs.’
