he one word that sums up what we want from our homes right now? It’s ‘humanity’. The recurring trends in interior design all have that one thing in common: there is real evidence of human touch.
Don’t get me wrong, that’s not to say that a vast majority of people aren’t asking ChatGPT for kitchen layouts, Gemini for renders of how a certain wallpaper might look in their hallway, or Claude for a comprehensive sourcing list for where to buy lighting, but the real magic of good interior design often comes from what’s unexplainable.
It’s a combination of things you’ve never, ever seen together before, and may never again; the unexpected attraction to an object that 99% of the population might describe as ‘bad taste’; a color choice that only makes sense to you, inspired by a childhood holiday from photographs that have never been digitized.
I can see the irony — explaining trends that seem to transcend algorithms, yet packaged up in an algorithm-friendly format — but that’s the beauty of what a trend is. It’s a moment captured in our human history, here through the lens of design. AI’s influence is inarguably the most important thing happening in the world right now, and how we look at, think about, and yes, decorate our homes next year is a snapshot of our sentiment towards it.
