Andrew and his team draw inspiration from landscapes much further afield, too. “So for example, we work heavily with mango wood, which is native to India. It’s a wonderful material,” he says. The Jericho sideboard and coffee table make the most of this exquisite, hard-wearing wood, bringing a touch of warmth and natural beauty into any room. “And when you visit Indian textile looms and see first hand their artisan crafts – you realise, it’s an incredible skill.” The artisan Geo Tufted cushions, meanwhile, can reinvigorate a tired space by adding depth, dimension and a sublime attention to detail.
rom sculptural statement pieces like the Studio Coffee Table to the durable, deep-grain appeal of the Jericho sideboard, Habitat’s vibrant Spring / Summer range champions versatile pieces that will help refresh and revitalise our interiors. As part of our Natural Habitats series, we interviewed some of Habitat’s very best designers
You can see this global approach to design reflected in so many of Habitat’s stand-out products, like the relaxed Faro lounge chair. This sleek, minimalist design evokes the calming elegance of Danish Hygge, with a soft, thickly woven backrest and strikingly low profile. ‘Less but more’, a concept popularised by designer and academic Dieter Rams, couldn’t be more apt – resulting in an impressive range of products that perfectly marry both form and function.
David Hutcheson, Senior Furniture Designer for Habitat, illustrates how this approach underpins much of his creative philosophy. “If you take a design and start reducing all the things you don’t need from it, you get to something that’s really quite special,” he says.
In contrast, the energy and vibrancy of urban environments gives David’s work a surprising, contemporary edge. “New York is a really big place of inspiration for me. I like industrial looks and feels – when we were in Brooklyn, we were looking at a lot of the crittal glass windows in buildings, thinking about how that could translate into panels for furniture.” As David shows us a sleek, Morillo 2 Door Glass Display Cabinet, it’s hard not to reflect on NYC’s remarkable skyline.
“I’m quite eclectic in my approach,” he says. Trends are changing, our homes are becoming our offices, and self expression through styling is more important than ever. “We really want to make note of how people are living differently now. And we want to capture that and make sure we have pieces there, ready for them to use for years to come.”
For Andrew Tanner, Habitat’s Head of Design, it all starts in the UK. “I’m originally from Leicester,” he tells us, “which has such a rich cultural heritage, it’s amazing.” Andrew feels very fortunate to have grown up in the aesthetic melting pot of the 70s, an era of lush decor and mid-century maximalism that still influences home styling today. “Living in the Midlands, with the potteries of Stoke-on-Trent, the weaving mills of Derbyshire… all that inspiration and craftsmanship was right on my doorstep.”
Take a closer look at the iconic Jesper chair, whose inviting yellow brushed linen upholstery, oak armrests and singular silhouette radiate mid-century craft. Andrew tells us that designs like these are all about transporting people to a singular place and time.
