Introduced in even a small way, candy stripes are an instant scheme-enlivener – perhaps
that’s why they feature so often in Playfulism. In this bedroom scheme by London-based interior designer Charlee Allan-Quinton, they punch through the rosy palette and add a point of contrast to the undulating headboard, providing a jolt of energy that brings the
space to life.

True Stripes

The wave motif is one of the calling cards
of this look – it’s whimsical, organic and incredibly fun. Inher scheme for the Montesol Experimental, a boutique hotel in Ibiza opened last year, Parisian interior designer Dorothée Meilichzon drew on undulating lines for furniture and joinery: note further nods to the sinuous shape through the cupboard handles.

Wave Off

Tiles are as important as wallpaper in bringing pattern to walls in Playfulist schemes: one of their benefits is that they bring texture and movement through glossy finishes that catch the light. A geometric design in a retro color combination – pink and green should always be seen – make this kitchen-living space by Parisian interior design studio Hauvette & Madani feel particularly nostalgic.

Tile Style

There’s more than a touch of nouveau boho about Playfulism – it’s the curved furniture pieces, the natural textures and, of course, the pattern clash. It’s a soft maximalism that benefits from subtle, small-scale prints rather than oversized murals: for this living room, Amsterdam interior design studio Atelier ND mixed understated textiles with a faded look and handcrafted feel.

In The Mix

Stones like granite and marble bring their own quiet pattern through veining, so they make a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms that embrace Playfulism. Parisian architectural designer Hugo Toro combines a golden Breccia Siena marble bath with a pink travertine table from his collection, Amanecer.
