Think dusky pink
Hailed as a contemporary new neutral, this key shade is ideal for adding warmth to your home this winter

Some colours are easily recognisable as neutrals: cream, oatmeal, stone… But the idea of using pink as one may surprise you. Yet dusky, or soft, pink can be your new cosy go-to at home: bringing a covetable feeling of warmth without reverting to darker, heavy shades. Used in place of conventional neutrals, pink will add plenty of personality, making a chic style statement with just enough of an edge. No wonder then that M&S Home has chosen to incorporate this stunning shade in its latest collections for the season, from snug bedding to tactile textured throws.
Interior designer Micaela Sharp has teamed up with M&S Home to help you style subtle pink in your own abode. Ahead, see how to create our dusky pink relaxing retreat with hints of Moroccan and Aztec pattern, plus Micaela reveals her top tips for using the colour in a bedroom to add relaxed elegance.
The first thing to note is the shade of pink: it’s not hot pink or barely-there Millennial pink, but a warmer, earthier hue that’s more akin to plaster and blush. It should work as easily with soft greys and biscuit tones as deeper shades. To prevent the pink from feeling too sweet, suggests Micaela, a really beautiful and elegant way to keep it

grounded is by mixing in a bit of black. In a bedroom, this could be a coordinating throw, patterned pouffe, artisan-style rug, or assortment of cushions: M&S Home’s collections have multiple options for adding contrast, including this gorgeous Kubba woven monochrome bed linen.
Bedrooms should be calm, soothing spaces, so while you can punch soft pink up with accent shades in other rooms of your home, it’s best to dial down the intensity here. If you’ve used pink on your walls or bedding, says Micaela, then adding furniture in rattan and natural woven materials will create a more rustic look. One or two striking pieces should be all that’s needed, whether that’s a woven pendant light, bedside cabinet or headboard. Accessories have a bigger impact in a neutral scheme, so try a mix of ceramic vases filled with dried bouquets, simple table lamps and holders for pillar candles.
Finally, keep the relaxed feel going with your finishing touches. Micaela advises draping soft materials around the room, or you can create a sweeping canopy above your bed using a swathe of sheer linen. Combined with soft shades of pink, intricate patterns, natural textures and a grown-up splash of black, it’s the perfect way to add an even cosier and inviting aesthetic this winter.

I like to include a few black accents to punctuate a white scheme – that can be a vase or a pattern on a floor covering.
