signalled the start of AW24 with fresh energy, revealing new ways to wear traditional fuzzy knits and chunky sweaters.
From shaggy cardigans at Stella McCartney, to lithe scale-adorned pieces at Balenciaga and mosaic notes at Christian Dior, labels looked to the opulence one might find in a regal countryside estate, then applied that magpie magic to texture, too. Shape was also key, of course, but – as the old fashion adage goes – less is more, so swap bulked-up layering for a considered trophy piece instead.
Here’s who did it best this season, and how to wear the look.

esigners found their minds wandering to a weekend in the countryside for inspiration this season. But instead of bucolic-friendly prints and heritage silhouettes, it was texture that stole the shows. Alluring, tactile, cosy: texture’s catwalk takeover
Irish designer Róisín Pierce is renowned for her innovative take on textiles – and this season was no different, with her lace- and crochet-crafted pieces taking centre stage.
FASHION: Dress, Simone Rocha, £1495; Earrings, Simone Rocha, £175. BEAUTY: TERRACOTTA LE TEINT FOUNDATION IN 3W WARM, ROUGE G CUSTOMISABLE JEWEL LIPSTICK IN 819 CASHEW BROWN, AND THE EYEBROW PENCIL DENSIFYING & SHAPING IN 01 LIGHT, GUERLAIN
While AW might traditionally call to mind heavy textures, designers leaned into flourishes instead this season: a bit of decoration here, a punchy set of earrings there. Accessories, it seems, are doing all the talking right now – especially Simone Rocha’s rosette-style earrings.
BEAUTY: Double R Renew and Repair Advanced Serum, L’Essentiel Natural Glow Foundation, Multi-Perfecting Concealer, Météorites Light-Revealing Pearls of Powder, Ombres G Eyeshadow Quad in Red Orchid, Mad Eyes Mascara, Rouge G Lipstick in Raspberry Pink, all Guerlain
BEAUTY: L’Essentiel Natural Glow Foundation, Météorites Light-Revealing Pearls of Powder, Ombres G Eyeshadow Quad in Red Orchid, Brow Pencil in Medium Brown, Noir G 24H Intense Volume Curl Mascara, Contour G Lip Pencil in Rosy Nude, and Rouge G Lipstick in Pinkish Brown, all Guerlain
If all-over texture feels too much, select one trophy piece – like this Christian Dior dress, with its glittering metallic detailing. Just leave the jewellery (not the headpiece) behind.

The late Vivienne Westwood was the master of mixing themes and eras to mesmerising effect, and always with a touch of Brit-Aristo, too. Uplift your AW24 look by pairing prints and accessories with different finishes.
Sequin scales have become the signature of autumn/winter’s penchant for opulence and dress-up, so opt for all-over shine with Balenciaga. Be sure to turn down the volume on accompanying accessories, though, ensuring they compliment rather than compete; Balenciaga shoes and a pair of vintage Valentino sunglasses are ideal.

hosted the summer Games. This year, our neighbours across the Channel will join London and LA (for Los Angeles 2028) as one of only three cities to be awarded the honour of hosting the Games three times. That’s why, on a cold but sunny Tuesday in early June, we’re at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Edmonton, North London, to photograph athletes Daryll Neita and Laviai Nielsen – both of whom are representing Team GB in Paris this year.
As we get underway, it should be no surprise, really, to see how many fans, young and old, stop both women to congratulate them on their recent selection. After all, both athletes have trained at this very track (the Centre was opened in 2007 by Tessa Jowell – then Minister for the Olympics – in preparation for the London Games) and hold seriously impressive records. It is, nevertheless, heartwarming to see – not least when Nielsen’s manager, former sprinter Jennifer Stoute, comes across our shoot by chance. Stoute is herself an Olympic bronze medallist (she also starred as Rebel in the original line-up of 1990s TV show, Gladiators), and it’s something of a full-circle moment to see these formidable female athletes, past and present, laughing and chatting together.
ith just days to go until Paris 2024 kicks off, it’s fair to say England has Olympic fever. It’s been a dozen years since 2012, when London last

from the catwalks. Alluring and tactile, it is always a signal of the new season, striking in either shape, shine or surface. Texture nods to the cosiness that comes with this time of year and of party season, which waits in the wings of December.
But this time there are different ways to wear it beyond the traditional or expected fuzzy knits and big jumpers. Think of the opulence and treasures that one might find from the interior of said regal countryside house. Texture takes on a magpie effect, from shaggy cardigans - just like a winter hug - at Stella McCartney, to lithe scales at Balenciaga and mosaic notes at Dior. Shape is important but as the old fashion adage goes, less is more in this instance. Don't bulk up with layers of texture, instead consider them carefully, pick trophy pieces to show off in. Here's who did exactly that and how to wear them..
