the staunch rules of American Prohibition. Today, these glamourous pieces are just as much a statement of joy, power, whimsy and extravagance. The finest modern interpretations often fuse interesting materials, such as titanium and enamel, with precious metals, including diamonds and gemstones, for maximum colour and impact, too – ensuring these glittering jewels are enjoyed as much by their wearer as they are their observers.
Symbolising the way humanity and nature must work together in harmony to produce lustrous cultured pearls, the graphic silhouette of this ring was inspired by the oyster baskets in which Tasaki’s Akoya pearl oysters are nurtured at its farm in Japan.

Part of a collection created by Chaumet in tribute to the world’s great opera venues (including East Sussex’s Glyndebourne and Milan’s La Scala), this ring contrasts a peachy-pink Padparadscha sapphire with a violet sapphire of almost equal size; two diva sopranos, harmoniously nestled amongst a symphony of Umba garnets, plus champagne and white diamonds.

Debuted in 2001, Pomellato’s ‘Nudo’ ring is named after the Italian word for ‘nude’, referring to its clean, stripped-back silhouette that is free from extra ornamentation. Arranged so that they sit almost between your fingers, the blue topazes and diamonds also appear to float gently above the skin for added wow factor.

Renowned for its use of only the most precious gemstones,
Graff’s vibrant ‘Swirl’ ring frames a sparkling, oval-cut ruby
with ‘wings’ of gleaming baguette-cut diamonds and
rubies – to mesmeric effect.

One of the most valued varieties of quartz, amethyst has been revered since the days of Cleopatra for its rich hue and glossy shine. London jeweller Lily Gabriella places a polished cabochon of this royal gemstone at the centre of her dramatic ‘Berry’ ring, framing it in pink sapphires to make the piece fit for a queen.

“I buy fine stones whenever I can, but always the best of the best,” says Jeremy Morris, CEO and Creative Director at the London jeweller David Morris. Case in point: the extraordinary 33.40-carat Colombian emerald at the centre of this curvaceous ‘Manta’ ring, surrounded by more than six carats of white diamonds.

The octagonal shape of this ring’s gleaming, emerald-cut morganite (expertly framed in black enamel and diamonds, like a precious portrait) is designed to mirror the shape of Paris’s storied Place Vendôme – home of Boucheron’s flagship store since 1893.
