The cardigan is often considered the most boring item of your winter wardrobe. Not so for Autumn/Winter 2024, in no small part thanks to Sabato De Sarno’s second womenswear collection for Gucci. othing signals the start of a new season than new trends to freshen up your wardrobe. Earlier this year all eyes were riveted on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris, where designers presented their much-anticipated Autumn/Winter 2024 collections.
Where there were of course moments that focused on maximalism and escapism, the overarching focus was on elevating the everyday. Creating trends that you could wear straight off the catwalk…
OUTERWEAR
Outerwear takes on a fun, tactile quality with hug-me styles seen at all the major
fashion weeks. Erdem’s show stopping coat, with its soft pink hues, has us dreaming of glittering balls. At Michael Kors, an ivory mohair coat, worn with a black leather belt,
will convince even the most hardcore minimalists to tackle this trend.

This season marks the return of one of the movements most synonymous with British fashion: grunge. Thanks to designers such as Daniel Lee at Burberry, grunge takes on a more polished form for Autumn/Winter 2024. Think feminine, flowing tartan skirts with a tough leather jacket and biker boots. Plaid, oversized shirts with prim pencil skirts. Sheer, draped tops with baggy jeans.

BOHO RETURNS
After its revival in the mid-noughties, boho quietly went away. But now it’s back, with a vengeance. The trend, which was associated with the free-spirit and hedonism of the 70s, takes on a more modern edge this season. Fringing adorned tailored coats, ruffle trim blouses are paired with distressed denim, floaty, tiered dresses with ladylike bags and over-the-knee boots. Look to Chanel, Elie Saab and of course, Chemena Kamali’s Chloe, for inspiration.
FASHION: Michelle wears: silk dress, POA, shearling boots £2,495, belt £1,275, vanity case £4,645, all Chanel
Lesia wears: coat and boots, Elie Saab; The Iconic handbag £4,045, Chanel; Belt £995, Sonia Petroff; ring £365, Goossens
In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent made waves with the first women’s tuxedo, forever dubbed ‘Le Smoking’. This season, Dolce & Gabbana put their own spin on the masculine evening wear, giving it a sleek, seductive edge with slim velvet trousers, a fitted
single-breasted tuxedo jacket and satin cumberbrand.

CORPORATE TIES
Using fashion as a form of self-expression is nothing new, and if you’re expressing one sentiment with this trend, it’s power. Forget dressing for the job you want, dress for the self-confidence you want to convey. Designers from Sportmax to Ulla Johnson are giving you the tools to do just that, putting their own spin on boardroom essentials like blazers and ties. Skirt suits, masculine tailoring, shoulder pads and cinched waists are all in this season.

Bar a checked red coat, there were no bright colours on the Dior Autumn/Winter 2024 runway, a deliberate choice on Maria Grazia Chiuri’s part. But instead of backing the usual black, grey and navy palette that is always a failsafe for the Winter season, the Creative Director offered up a soft selection of nude and cream colourways that lifted everything from outerwear to suiting and evening gowns.

LAYERS & SWATHES
Elegant comfort is de rigueur this winter. It’s all about layering cosy pieces that don’t hide away the female form, but instead enhance it, thanks to draped necklines and silhouettes that add movement. Embrace pops of colour, layered over elevated tonal basics in neutral or monochrome hues. The key is to invest in luxe, natural fabrics such as cashmere and wool.
FASHION: Michelle wears: Wool coat £2,365, wool shirt £780, layered shirt £780, layered trousers £780, all Issey Miyake
Lesia wears:cotton and wool coat £3,500, cashmere pullover £1,900, all Fendi; black leather Isabelle boots £1,795, Jimmy Choo
Nicolas Ghesquière knows the future is now, and that we want to wear it. His Autumn/Winter 2024 collection, while nodding to some of his designs of the past 10 years, leans into his love of travel and sci-fi. This is evident in the athleisure-inspired jackets and tracksuits, sculptural dress and minimalist colour palette of whites, icy blues and the eveningwear adorned with futuristic silver discs.

The coquette trend is alive and well for Autumn/Winter, taking on a more refined and elevated form. Ultra-feminine and romantic details are still present - bows, floral prints, ruffles and lace - but with a more subdued feel. Pastels are swapped for darker jewel tones and monochrome hues, and ‘girlycore’ pieces are juxtaposed with tougher items such as leather boots and denim.
