A certain slouchiness is de rigueur when it comes to reinterpreting the grunge trend, which was built on the idea of layers, androgyny and loose-fitting clothes. But Standing Ground turns that on its head, opting for an elegant and rather statuesque take. Look to its draped sheath dress, then add shoes with attitude to anchor – a styling detail reminiscent of the ’90s.

runge is back for autumn/winter, but this time the mood is quintessentially British. Borrowing from both the Bloomsbury set and Glasto crowd, this new iteration of the trend is simultaneously pretty and punk, as the likes

Sometimes you are the accessory to the winter blooms, not the other way round. A rich brocade dress is rebellious to the prevailing season’s floral demands, and Simone Rocha – with just enough dose of femininity – does it best.

of Vivienne Westwood and Simone Rocha look to upgrade the iconic fashion movement with their own stylistic stamps.
Perhaps this revisit should come as no surprise though, given how hard we’ve fallen for the nostalgic charms of the ’90s and ’00s of late – think Kate Moss, who had a significant hand in defining the moods of both eras. But this time it’s with a dash of garden-party chic thrown in, which means a new wave of designers – both heritage and contemporary in feel – are enjoying their moment in the new-season spotlight. Cue an exciting mix of textures, colours and silhouettes that throwback and throw forward. Here are the labels to put on your radar…
Toughen up a garden-party aesthetic with textures that count. Always one for tactile delights that look to the future, Nicolas Ghesquiere at Louis Vuitton, delivers a dress that has ‘future Glasto nostalgia’ written all over it.

Drapes and swagged details speak of grunge design, but at Victoria Beckham they’re reinvented in bold blocks of colour that feel decidedly of the moment.

Mining the style of Virginia Woolf before adding a Glastonbury tilt, Maria Grazia Chiuri at Christian Dior is exploring the joys of a knitted vest and festival-ready boots for the season ahead – and we’re here for it.

If there is a signature colour for the grunge era it’s surely green, and the most recognisable silhouette for festival fields? Think short, short hemlines – be they shorts or vintage dresses. Talia Byre takes the lead by combining these design codes for autumn/winter, while adding a luxe lingerie twist.

This Hong-Kong born, London-based designer has garnered great attention of late for his striking sculptural pieces laced with party spirit. Here, the dress does the talking – just add a grunge nod with winter boots.

Stella McCartney and Kate Moss’ friendship has long been documented, and this nymph-like dress feels like it could come from the supermodel’s own style archive. The designer’s sustainable underpinnings also make it perfect for today’s eco-conscious mindset.

Molly Goddard has channelled grunge photography icon Corinne Day this season, but cleverly swaps dusky shades for her signature punch and shine, with designs rendered in bright pink.

Festival dressing in tinsel and tartan takes the trend through to winter, thanks to Chopova Lowena – aka the British-Bulgarian brand founded by Laura Lowena and Emma Chopova. A flourish of Erdem footwear keeps this look just the right side of quintessential.
