Shining a spotlight on Teroldego Rotaliano and Pinot Grigio
Placing Trentino’s iconic white wine in the centre of the stage
Teroldego Rotaliano is a red wine with a story to tell. Its name is shrouded in mystery – legend has it that ‘Teroldego’ was known as the ‘Gold of Tyrol’ in the Hapsburg court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Today, Teroldego has become the symbol of the centuries-old winegrowing tradition in Piana Rotaliana, a vigorous variety that’s tamed in the mineral-rich soils of the imposing mountainous vineyards by being grown on Trentino’s iconic pergolas. The resulting wines capture the strength and the soul of their mountain home in every sip.
Castel Firmian’s Teroldego Rotaliano is matured in a select range of fine oak barriques to preserve and enhance the variety’s unique character. The result is a velvety and smooth wine that delivers aromas of blackberry and cherry, balanced by notes of cocoa and vanilla from its time spent ageing in wood. A full-bodied wine, echoing the rugged landscape of Trentino’s majestic mountains.
In the best vintage years, Castel Firmian also produces its Teroldego Rotaliano Superiore Riserva, made with grapes harvested from four of its very best vineyards. Its Riserva wine is aged in casks made from the best oak – Allier and Tronçais – before undergoing further time in bottle, producing a more structured wine with complex flavours of blueberry, prune, redcurrant, and spice.

While Teroldego Rotaliano may be Trentino’s flagship red wine, Pinot Grigio has an equally rich heritage in the mountains. The classic white grape has travelled the world, but calls Trentino its home, where its most authentic expressions are produced – shy at first, before bursting into life with delicate, floral aromas and crisp, fruity flavours.
The classic Pinot Grigio from Castel Firmian is a textbook example, with its fruity aromas of pear dancing between floral notes of camomile and magnolia. On the palate, its elegance comes to the fore, with a fine structure to balance its delicate acidity. Its crispness evokes the fresh mountain air of Trentino’s green pastures.
During the very best vintages, it’s joined by the Pinot Grigio Riserva, which elevates Pinot Grigio into the spotlight that it deserves. The grapes for the Riserva come from an area that’s been dedicated for generations to Pinot Grigio, which is also sometimes known as Rülander in Trentino.
A proportion of the wine is fermented in barriques, before undergoing between six and eight months of barrel ageing, adding warm vanilla strokes to the final wine, which shines with complex notes of mature white peach, pear, and chamomile nuance.
A welcome introduction to the wider range
Castel Firmian’s range of single variety wines stretches beyond its headline-grabbing Teroldego Rotaliano and Pinot Grigio. Named after the 15th-century castle that overlooks the Piana Rotaliana, the brand’s cast of supporting characters includes Chardonnay, Nosiola, Moscato Giallo, Müller Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc among the whites.
Its selection of reds features Pinot Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Schiava, Marzemino, and Lagrein, along with its pink cousin, Lagrein Rosato. Sustainable farming in the vineyards helps to capture the unique identity of each variety in the resulting wines.
As well as enjoying the single variety range in restaurants and wine shops around the world, visitors to Trentino can also make a pilgrimage to the ‘Cittadella del Vino’ or Citadel of Wine, with its tastings, winery visits, and events to help guests learn more about the region and its incredible wines from the mountains. The citadel is built on former industrial land, which was redeveloped to create a winery dedicated to sustainable production, with its undulating roof echoing the shape of the terraced vineyards in which Trentino’s traditional pergolas sit.
