hen giving your dining room a new look, it’s easy to get seduced by the latest trends, but it’s important to invest in pieces that you’re going to love for years to come. ‘The biggest mistake you can make is to buy into a really of-the-moment trend that’s not going to last,’ says Ideal Home’s Editor-in-Chief Heather Young.
A dining set is such a central element of your room’s design, you should look for something that’s versatile and has staying power. That way it will provide a strong style foundation for you to build on, and you can have fun introducing that season’s trends when you come to dress the space.
Get that foundation right, and you’ll give yourself the building blocks for a timeless scheme. ‘Woods like oak are a great investment,’ says Heather. ‘They’re going to age really well and they’re very easy to dress up for different looks.’ Oak Furnitureland’s Oaklee dining table is a great example of a table that’s built to last. Danish-designed and made from 100% solid oak, it’s part of a set that includes a co-ordinating sideboard and bench.
Woods such as oak bring warmth and character to a space, with wood tones acting as the perfect canvas for any colour, enabling you to build a colour scheme using shades that bring you joy. Oaklee also features subtle, well-considered details such as chamfered edging and classic splayed legs on all the pieces, which elevate the design to make it a true classic.
Because our needs and spaces are always evolving, versatility is a key consideration when choosing what’s going to work in your dining space. An easy solution is a dining table that’s extendable. The Oaklee table comfortably seats six and features a cleverly integrated butterfly extension that's neatly stored within the table itself. Designed to evolve with your home and the moments shared around it, it can easily extend to accommodate up to eight people when entertaining friends and family. ‘When you’ve got guests coming over, an extendable design really comes into its own,’ says Heather.

Seating is another element of your dining set up that can add both character and flexibility. Instead of a formal arrangement, opt for mix and match seating. The Lars dining chair from Oak Furnitureland has a Scandi-style, wishbone-inspired design that features beautiful curves with armrests for added comfort, plus the hand-woven seat adds a gorgeous texture to layer visual interest and depth to your space. For informal mealtimes, a bench is a brilliant addition as it offers flexible seating for family meals and entertaining without taking up too much space.
Choosing classic, timeless furniture pieces means you have a beautiful base that’s really versatile, and with that comes the confidence to experiment with the latest trends. Your dining set will form the backbone of your space, however you dress it. It gives you the freedom to change up the look without having to replace the dining set, from small seasonal touches to a whole room makeover. Colour is an obvious tool – the paint shade on your walls has a huge impact on how a space feels. For atmosphere there’s nothing better than the right lighting – mix a table lamp on a sideboard with a floor lamp in the corner of the room and flickering candles on the tabletop.
