A Spanish wine-lover’s safari
The Pata Negra Special Fauna Edition collection is designed to offer the perfect starting point: four characterful wines that each clearly express the terroir and grape varieties of their DOs. The collection enables drinkers to contrast the different styles, create pairings with a range of dishes and discover their favourite expressions.
Each of the Special Fauna Edition wines is labelled with a different animal native to the Iberian peninsula – contemporary designs that embody the vibrant spirit of these regions.
Over the years, the Pata Negra range has won numerous awards in prestigious wine competitions. Currently exported to more than 150 countries, Pata Negra serves as a global ambassador for Spanish winemaking, combining tradition with innovation and ensuring that oenophiles across the world can experience the essence of Spain’s rich wine heritage.
Luciano García-Carrión, vice president at J. García Carrión, says: ‘We see strong growth potential for Spanish white wines, especially Rueda, which is gaining visibility as consumers look for alternatives’.
Likewise, although Rioja continues to be a point of reference for the UK market, Luciano García-Carrión sees that ‘Toro and La Mancha are increasingly recognised for offering excellent value and authenticity. This makes our Special Fauna Edition highly relevant, as it brings together the most dynamic denominations of origin in one strong portfolio.’
‘The Special Fauna Edition was launched to highlight the strength of Spanish Denominations of Origin in a fresh and engaging way. The concept combines quality wines from emblematic regions with a bold, modern design that appeals to a new generation of consumers, while reassuring experienced wine drinkers with the guarantee of a Denomination of Origin,’ says Luciano García-Carrión.

Living up to its name
In the finest vintages, J. García Carrión bottled its special gran reserva with a black capsule instead of the usual red, earning it the nickname ‘pata negra’, from a colloquial phrase meaning ‘the very best’. So when the company launched the first ‘umbrella brand’ to bring together multiple Denominations of Origin (DOs), it took this as its name: Pata Negra. This pioneering new concept was launched in Valdepeñas in 1987.
The new brand’s inaugural release was a Valdepeñas Gran Reserva from 1978. Pata Negra soon expanded to encompass eight DOs across the country: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Valdepeñas, Rueda, Toro, Cava, Jumilla and La Mancha.

Not only does the range showcase the best that Spain’s DOs have to offer, but the wines have the versatility to be great wines with food. It was conceived for sharing moments – from informal aperitifs to festive occasions – always delivering character and authenticity.
