Musician and Chanel muse Yasmin Hass on sunglasses, songwriting and the power of versatility
EYES forward
“The shoot made me realise I want to start wearing [sunglasses] more,” she laughs while
trying on another striking pair from Chanel’s resort 2025 collection.
Infused with an athletic attitude, a seaside-pastel colour palette, plus industrial details
to reflect the mid-century, high-rise setting of Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse – the Marseilles-based building at which the collection was originally shown earlier this year in
May - Chanel tweeds were met with mosaic details and hoodie design flourishes,
alongside bows and lightly layered accessories for the resort outing.
Meanwhile, on eyewear signature Chanel motifs, such as the chain, quilting and
iconic CC branding (accented with pink, yellow and grey lenses, as well as diamantes, no less) adorn the arms of shield, pilot, rectangle and square designs to make for
highly covetable, strikingly bold sunglasses.
Shape and proportion, including those decorative details that so instantly speak
Chanel, have been cranked up a notch to make sure they do all the hard work,
which comes in particularly useful when wearing between seasons.
“They’re an easy way to elevate an outfit,” notes Hass, who favours a simple black style
from the shoot: “I feel like they’re super-versatile and can be worn with any outfit.”

‘Versatile’ is a fitting choice of word, it seems. Hass’s own body of work can’t be pinned down to one genre, and pushing beyond constraints was something she fought for early on in her career, eventually making a name for herself through a mix of indie pop, dreamy electronics, gripping lyrics and soulful vocals. She began writing poetry before she tried music and has always been drawn to exploring the ideas of identity.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Hass grew up in London, and has a multi-heritage background, including Arawak, Jamaican and German, all of which, she says, have inspired her work.
It was her father who introduced her to Nina Simone, for example, while her mother
introduced her to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Stephen Sondheim.
“My mum inspires my career always,” says Hass. “She introduced me to the
world of musical theatre growing up, which also plays a big role. I fell in love with the storytelling in these shows and I often draw inspiration from the ones I love.”
Other early influences include her aunt, the acclaimed Jamaican gospel singer Carlene Davis, and her uncle, Tommy Cowan, who was Bob Marley’s road manager.
“I’ve felt so inspired recently, which is a nice surprise, as sometimes things can feel worn
out by December,” says Hass. “I’ve been writing lots over the last few months and I feel like
I’ve learnt a lot about myself this year, which I’m excited by.”
For 2025, she’s looking forward to her next single, out in January, “along with my second EP to follow. I cannot wait to share my new music with everyone!” There’s also some time
scheduled in Australia, to perform shows and see family.

The synergy goes further, too: “Chanel, for me, isn’t just about wearing a piece of clothing or an accessory, but embracing a philosophy of self-expression and confidence,” says Hass.
“This means a lot to me – it’s a super-important part of being an artist.”
Until then, she can count on her extended Chanel family for support too. How does it feel to be a muse for such an iconic brand, I wonder? “To be honest it’s a dream come true – I’m unbelievably excited and honoured,” she says, reflecting that her first memory of the label, which she describes as having a “timeless elegance”, was Grace Kelly. “I’ve always been obsessed with Grace Kelly and I remember seeing a photo of her wearing a Chanel two-piece when I was younger.”

There are two things you might not know about Yasmin Hass, the singer and Chanel muse.
One: she wrote an adaptation of her favourite musical Into The Woods when she was a
teenager and still has plans to produce it at some point. Two: she doesn’t often wear
sunglasses, which might seem surprising for a star on the rise.
