JerryRigEverything’s HONOR Magic Vs teardown video flips open the world of foldables
See exactly how HONOR takes a leap forward in this hotly contested foldable market
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Is the future of smartphones foldable? HONOR’s upcoming flagship foldable, the Magic Vs – that will be launching at MWC – certainly makes a compelling case. A sleek, ultralight form factor paired with a two-in-one foldable display epitomises HONOR’s streamlined approach to this latest smartphone evolution. HONOR Magic Vs already has a few remarkable points when compared with Samsung's foldable phone. And what’s more, it’s even more advanced than the already impressive 2022 first generation model.
And the inside
… a 7.9-inch display for a tablet-like experience so you can work and play like never before.
The benefits of foldable are immediately apparent, providing a two-in-one solution for both work and play with a larger, unfolded screen for streaming, reading, browsing and more – while retaining the compact portability of a traditional smartphone when closed. And it closes pretty much perfectly.
But how does it achieve this effortless form when engineering usually lies at the heart of the dilemma for foldables? And how does it manage to pack in that generous battery?
YouTuber @JerryRigEverything took the Magic Vs to task in his latest video, digging deep into the components and construction of the device to discover how HONOR is tackling these problems head on.
A foldable revolution
Adopting zero-gear technology, HONOR has drastically reduced the number of components used in its hinge (from 92 in the previous generation to a mere 4). By using robust, aerospace-grade polymeric materials, it has developed a durable and incredibly lightweight solution that can withstand over 400,000 folds. That’s 100 folds per day, for an impressive 10 years.
The sophisticated structure of this single-piece hinge means the Vs opens out to reveal an extra-wide, almost completely flat display, and folds tightly and securely with almost no gap. It’s comfortable to carry, too, with a width of 12.9mm when folded. This is even more impressive when you consider that the Vs is packing a 5,000mAh battery, the highest capacity currently available on the foldable market.
Aesthetically, foldable has never looked better. The display of HONOR Magic Vs, both internal and external, is everything you’d expect from a device on the cutting edge.
The Magic Vs boasts a 6.45 inch external display with a 90% screen-to-body ratio, allowing users to view content and write text just like the screen of any flagship slate-phone. The AMOLED screen is crisp and colourful, supporting up to 1.07 billion colours and a buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate that brings photos, video and movies to life with maximum clarity even under
bright sunlight.
Pixel-perfect display

Smart on the outside
A circadian night display technology, and a dynamic dimming screen to help reduce eye strain are welcome innovations that bring the Magic Vs in line with (and beyond) what’s available in the traditional smartphone market. With a comfortable aspect ratio of 21:9, the external display of HONOR Magic Vs – unlike other competitors, like Samsung – allows users to view and write with remarkable ease, outperforming the existing foldables that often come with a remote-control-style long and narrow external screen. Plus, thanks to screen-focussing technology that reduces power consumption by 10%, it’ll last longer, too.
When folded, the HONOR Magic Vs delivers a tablet-like experience with an extra-wide 7.9-inch internal display, making it a two-in-one device to satisfy users’ every need, no matter for work or play. It also offers a perfect option for users who seek effortless multi-tasking and more screen real estate to enjoy all their favourite content.
Whether you pick the cyan, or black colourway, you’ll be treated to a luxury look and feel, accentuated by a glass back and polished metal frame.
More than just a gimmick, HONOR’s foldable phones are a genuine innovation. Just when we began to think that smartphones had reached their ceiling in both form and function, foldable promises to shake things up with an imaginative new take – promoting an exciting era of design and technological advancement in the space.

“The battery has also easily the largest capacity we’ve ever seen in a folding phone, so far at least, with 5,000mAh of capacity, 14% more than the Galaxy Fold4.”

Magic Vs is the thinnest and lightest foldable phone HONOR has offered yet – meaning anything's possible while on the move.
