HONOR Magic5 Pro –
a deep dive into HONOR’s
AI-powered Image Engine
We take a look at the incredible photography tech behind HONOR’s latest flagship device
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
One of the most surprising developments in smartphone technology over the past few years has been the adoption of AI-powered cameras – and at the forefront of this exciting new trend is HONOR, who’s Image Engine has been a buzzworthy talking point ever since an early version of the tech was implemented in the Magic3 and Magic4 series
And now, at MWC in Barcelona this year, HONOR officially launched its latest flagship, the HONOR Magic5 Pro – unveiling a much-improved HONOR Image Engine. Below we dig deep into all of the latest details, and look ahead to the future of AI-supported smartphone tech.
Super Dynamic Display
Maximum eye comfort and crystal clear clarity with a 6.81" OLED screen featuring high-frequency PWM dimming and Circadian Night Display.
The HONOR Image Engine is not only a Comprehensive Sensing System, but also a Computational Photography Platform, combining hardware and software capabilities to deliver excellent image performance in a variety of different scenarios.
The Comprehensive Sensing System includes hardware such as sensors and lenses, while the Computational Photography Platform uses a series of extensively developed software algorithms that allow several cameras to communicate and share information with each other, bringing you a full focal length, ultra-clear shooting experience.
The previously launched HONOR Magic3 series and HONOR Magic4 series are powered by the HONOR Image Engine, and both boast excellent imaging performance, colour definition and detail. The HONOR Magic5 Pro is equipped with the next-generation HONOR Image Engine, performing even better in more scenarios and at different focal lengths. Just like the Magic3 and Magic4 series, the Magic5 Pro has been crowned in the DXOMARK smartphone camera rankings for best-in-class quality.
What is the HONOR Image Engine?
The Magic5 Pro features an impressive 50MP triple main camera system, with a Wide Camera, Ultra Wide Camera and Telephoto Camera, producing crystal clear images at a range of different light levels and distances.
The 50MP Wide Camera is equipped with a large f/1.6 aperture and a 1/1.12 inch customised sensor, which brings much more light into the lens to deliver images with greater sharpness, better exposure and richer dynamic range. This is especially useful in low-light conditions or complex lighting environments, enabling you to easily capture vivid, high definition shots, day
or night.
For stunning close-ups that maximise detail and clarity, or for breathtaking wide-angle landscape photography, the 50MP Ultra Wide Camera has you sorted, boasting a 122° field of view, 13mm focal length and large f/2.0 aperture.
Last, but certainly not least, a 50MP periscope Telephoto Camera paired with a Sony IMX858 sensor supports 3.5x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom for excellent long distance images. Plus, with a 30cm focus length, this camera delivers crystal clear close-ups at 3.5x-10x zoom, for an incredible macro photography experience.
Cutting-edge hardware
Incredible close-ups. Amazing wide-angle shots. Take photos with confidence using three 50MP cameras.
Triple Camera System
All of this high-spec hardware forms the backbone of HONOR’s Computational Photography Platform, which uses intelligent AI and machine learning to unleash the full magic of
smartphone photography.
First up, let’s take a look at the Falcon Capture system, which boosts the capturing speed of the Magic5 Pro immensely, helping you snap pictures in milliseconds with remarkable ease. Compared to the previous generation of HONOR smartphones, the Falcon Capture Algorithm improves start-up speed by 102%, shutter reaction speed by 147%, imaging speed by 118%, and focus speed by a staggering 245%. This not only makes taking high quality photos an effortless, ultrafast process, but it improves image clarity as well.
Plus, with cutting-edge AI Motion Sensing capabilities, the Magic5 Pro makes shooting complex scenes with unpredictable movements easier than ever before. By tapping into an AI network trained on more than 270,000 images, the Magic5 Pro is able to identify and react to varied scenarios intelligently. For live sports, music events, and even street photography, this is a real game-changer – helping amateurs and pros alike to focus on framing and finding the perfect subject, rather than relying on lightning fast reaction times. Using this feature alongside AI Auto capture, HONOR was even able to capture polish basketball player Piotr Grabowski’s Guinness World Record winning 3.2 metre between the legs slam dunk on the Magic5 Pro – without any input from a photographer.

An issue with many smartphone cameras is distortion and blur, especially when shooting at range. Leveraging its much improved AI learning networks, HONOR is taking on this challenge with Ultra Fusion Computational Optics technology, which can imitate the way light interacts with the camera lens to optimise images and improve detail from 3.5x zoom all the way to 100x zoom.
Additionally, the latest HONOR Image Engine comes packed with Super HDR image processing settings, backed by an AI algorithm for true-to-life colour accuracy. This process draws extra light and shadow information from an extra frame, helping the HONOR Magic5 Pro produce beautiful landscape images with maximum clarity and depth of colour.
All in the detail
With this latest iteration of the HONOR Image Engine, the HONOR Magic5 Pro is set to revolutionise smartphone photography – empowering people to capture the moments that matter like never before.
