Teardown video of HONOR Magic Vs
shows the next-gen hinge for foldable phones
Ahead of this month's launch, see how the landscape is
shaking up thanks to HONOR's latest innovation

YouTuber and dismantler of expensive tech, @JerryRigEverything, is pushing HONOR’s new flagship foldable to its limits. In recent years, the smartphone market has seen some exciting innovation – not least with HONOR’s first generation Magic V in 2022 – in its
home market.
Yet, nothing quite matches the leap forward for HONOR’s Magic Vs – a step change from the first generation and the first foldables foray into global markets.
Foldable tech itself has graduated from a futuristic novelty to flagship material, thanks in no small part to huge improvements in hinge mechanisms – as seen in the likes of the HONOR Magic Vs. So are we about to see a new standard being set?
And the inside
… a 7.9-inch display for a tablet-like experience so you can work and play like never before.
Propelling the design chops of the foldable revolution forward is the Super-light Gearless Hinge in the Magic Vs. The structure of the hinge can be clearly seen in JerryRigEverything's video. Carefully crafted using a single-piece casting process, the supporting structure of hinge now requires only 4 working components, compared with the 92 used in the Magic V. This means the screen is nearly completely flat when unfolded and has almost no gap when closed, elevating the folding standard above its closest competitors by giving a thinner, flatter look at 12.9mm.
Impressive hinge innovation
“Unlike Galaxy Z Fold4, the HONOR Magic Vs folds tightly with almost no gap and has a nearly completely flat screen when unfolded – something that tackles the current pain points of existing foldable devices and can’t be replicated.”

Fewer components and the aerospace-grade polymeric material used in them means the device is significantly lighter than its predecessor, coming in at only 261g in the vegan leather back version. These advancements in materials also means that the Magic Vs can withstand 400,000 folds (that’s 100 a day, for 10 years), which sets a new benchmark for foldable smartphone design. As @JerryRigEverything proved in his teardown, the Magic Vs definitely doesn’t fold under pressure – except in the way it’s supposed to.
Thanks to the reduced number of hinge components, the Magic Vs now has internal space for a 5,000mAh large battery. That clocks in at the highest capacity in a foldable smartphone, which enables it to power its stunning 6.45-inch AMOLED display. When unfolded, the internal 7.9-inch display turns the Magic Vs into a two-in-one device, offering a tablet-like experience as well as
a smartphone.
HONOR’s latest flagship is more than a match for its contemporaries in the foldable market. But does the Magic Vs forecast a resurgence of foldable tech in the wider smartphone market, decades after the likes of the Motorola StarTAC clamshell?
Well, it seems that the future really does hinge on… well, the hinge. The Super-light Gearless innovation of the Magic Vs means that it is the thinnest and lightest foldable phone HONOR has offered yet, and these are design specs that matter greatly to manufacturers. As foldable designs become sleeker, their appeal becomes more and more of a no-brainer. Their hinges eliminate the need for carrying a tablet alongside a phone, providing a convenient all-in-one tool for work and play. Not to mention the novelty of the folding screen making phones like the Magic Vs prime to be the breakout star in a market hungry for imagination.
Is folding the future?
HONOR’s innovation in the mechanics of the hinge bodes well for the future of foldable smartphones because it has set the new standard for the market – and the standard is high. Now it is on the global stage, we may well see not just the heads of consumers turning, but the heads of the phone manufacturers too.
