ootball’s biggest rival is not VAR, early kick-offs, TV companies or the dreaded three-week international break. It’s prostate cancer.

one man dies from the disease. That’s a dad, a brother, a mate, the bloke your season ticket is next to that you’ve never spoken to despite sitting next to him for 11 seasons. A person who suddenly stops coming to the game. That’s why Prostate United isn't just another charity campaign operating in football. It’s a football movement saving men’s lives.
Prostate United :
The most important fixture on the football calendar
Forget opening day, the local derby, Boxing Day and the season run-in. The first fixture you need to look for every season is Prostate United (a), which takes place every October.
The story of Prostate United’s birth is worth telling. Back in 2018, Rotherham United backroom staff members Ross Burbeary and Stephen Gilpin decided to run 10k every day in October after Stephen’s grandfather was diagnosed with the disease. What began as two blokes in Rotherham United training gear grinding out daily runs began to spread beyond their workplace, beyond Yorkshire and around the English Football League. Staff at other clubs began doing it, then fans, members of the public and the snowball effect sent it viral. Today the challenge has evolved into a powerful, game-changing movement that has captured fans of the Premier League, EFL, National League, and grassroots football. This season the challenge is even bigger, stakes are higher, and there’s a shirt waiting for you to pull on.
Prostate United have adopted a motto and the essence is: ‘This club matters more’. Think about it. We spend weekends screaming ourselves hoarse, analysing xG, arguing over referee decisions, yet when it comes to Prostate United vs Cancer, we’re all in the same end of the stadium. We’re all playing for the same badge.
Do it your way—on a treadmill, around the local park before work, or clocking up the distance on your commute; just get it done when you can in between day-to-day life. The best thing about it is, you don’t do it alone. When you sign up, you join your favourite football club’s official squad—or you can even set up a new team representing your Sunday league, midweek 5-a-side, or pub team, and get teammates to join.
Stating your club allegiance is important, as there is an official Prostate United league table tracking people’s efforts. Once registered, you’re directed to join your favourite club’s team and help their collective fundraising efforts. The table logs everyone's fundraising totals, so each time you clock a mile or receive another donation, you’re helping your club climb the Prostate United league table.
All fans want to see their club climb the table, so you need to lace up, log activity via apps like Strava, and get your friends, family, work colleagues and social media community to donate. Accountability is key: no cutting corners, no skipping matchdays.
Last season saw professional football managers, academy kids, backroom staff, and terraces all unite once again. Cult heroes and club legends stepped over the white line alongside everyday supporters to drag their teams up the league.
The beauty of this amazing challenge is that it’s not preachy. It’s one that tests your grit. You simply get consistent, grind it out, log daily progress and show people you’re getting it done. Rewards come via donations, bragging rights over mates and rival fans, and the knowledge that you’re doing something massively positive for men’s health, and your own personal health, in a real, authentic way. Oh, and when you hit £500 you earn a limited edition Prostate United football shirt. Who doesn’t want that?
Every single mile you log and every pound you raise funds groundbreaking research and crucial support services that give dads, grandads, brothers, sons and mates more time to watch the game they love.
Your club needs you. Last year raised over half a million pounds. More than 3,000 fans participated representing 100-plus clubs across the football pyramid, with Doncaster Rovers pipping Manchester United to the Prostate United league title. This year they're taking it a step further and need you on the squad to help make history and save more men’s lives. Your mission is run, walk, complete every day in October.
You don't need a UEFA Pro Licence to get involved. The rules are straightforward, flexible, and open to every fitness level. Choose your daily discipline:

September is your pre-season. This is where you assemble your squad, get your training miles in, and fire up the group chat and social media challenge. Tell people you’re doing this, spread awareness and make yourself accountable to it.
Whether you’re a 40-something season ticket holder at a Premier League giant, a terrace regular at an EFL stadium, a non-league ground hopper, or a former grassroots player who hasn't run pre-season laps in five years—it’s time to step onto the pitch.
