This is Notes on a Fragrance, a series that brings the most luxurious scents to life. Perfume is so much more than its smell—it’s an ornament on your dressing table, and often, the thing people remember us by. Be it timeless fragrances worn for generations or new cult scents that linger on the most stylish individuals, here, we highlight every last detail (or drop) of a perfume’s personality. So much so, you’ll practically be able to smell this scent through the screen and know exactly how it will make you feel when you wear it.
Legend has it that Cleopatra seduced Caesar with her fragrance, which inspired brand founder Bram Niessink to experiment with and mix perfume oils after a trip to Egypt. He brought the most-complimented one to market and founded Fugazzi in 2018 with no formal perfumery training. As a result, Bram’s sophisticated but accessible brand is driven by curiosity and a desire to rebel against convention, which is reflected in the name, a playful twist on the word “fugazi” (meaning fake or illusion). “Storysmelling” to the max to conjure personal memories with every spritz, his determination to question everything manifests in Fugazzi’s scents. Now, in collaboration with Givaudan master perfumer Jordi Fernández, Bram brings us a captivating fragrance in Cloudh Nine that’s impossible to ignore.
Cloudh Nine, only at Sephora, is the olfactory equivalent of a bed made with freshly washed Egyptian cotton, high thread count, crisp white sheets. Luxurious, inviting yet light—in contrast to the weighty bottle—the first misting softly swaddles you like a dream. After pressing the nozzle to a satisfyingly good spritz, there are no distractions as the airiest oud scent unfolds, settling on your skin and in the air around you like a halo. It makes a strong impression whilst being extremely subtle. If you’ve ever wondered what floating on a cl(oudh) feels like, this is it.

Perfumes don’t have to be extra loud, colourful or punchy to shake up the status quo. In fact, it’s the soft, lightweight skin scents which are the most intriguing right now—the ones that you spray when getting dressed first thing, but still leave a subtle mark after dark. They extend the clean-girl aesthetic far beyond no-makeup makeup and slicked-back buns. One of the headliners of Sephora UK’s Next Big Thing fragrance category, it’s Fugazzi Cloudh Nine set to define this category for the season ahead. The independent, Amsterdam-based fragrance house is leading the charge towards conceptual luxury scents. Cloudh Nine, an eau de parfum stocked exclusively at Sephora, showcases this expertly; Fugazzi has softened dark and dramatic oud into something lighter and more wearable.

Fugazzi’s signature cream packaging gives no clues about the depth and freshness of the unique fragrance within. Intentionally understated and unadorned, what’s inside is open to interpretation. Timeless, elegant yet contemporary, the sleek flacon is minimal, pared-back and reserved in its design. Pull off the white magnetic cap, and a contrasting black spray nozzle sharpens the other elements. Less is definitely more; the distinctive bottle design shines in its understated glory.

Abstract luxury fragrances like this are Fernández’ speciality, and the master perfumer has included certain scent molecules that are exclusive to Givaudan in this 20% oil concentration. Akigalawood, for example, adds the distinctive woody dimension, giving it an oud-like depth without overwhelming the blend with intensity. High-quality fragrances don’t come creamier or more velvety than Cloudh Nine, which is only stocked at Sephora.
Expect the unexpected with this scent. The first aromatic layer that greets you is unmistakably floral, luminous green and a touch sweet. Rose, peony and lily of the valley really glow before fading smoothly into a warming musk haze at the fragrance’s heart, which beats for hours. An oud profile is intense by nature, and the trio of modern, earthy and almost ethereal woods in the dry-down start to unfurl. Spicy, powdery and smoky all at once, if you only associate ouds with autumn, think again. You—and the people around you—will be drawn to Cloudh Nine’s heady, enveloping complexity year-round.
Some fragrance bottles are designed so beautifully, they’re like a piece of sculptural art in themselves. Only stocked at Sephora, Cloudh Nine might be sleek—even subtle—but when its clear glass bottle catches the light on your bedside table, bathroom shelf or dressing table, that’s when it becomes a true ornamental object of desire.
