Sustainability at the heart of Decanter events
Decanter hosts a range of events every year, and our team works hard to ensure that each and every event has minimal impact on the environment, taking a creative approach to all practices.
The Decanter World Wine Awards produces 10,000L of waste wine a year, this is converted into energy through anaerobic digestion. This natural process sees microorganisms break down organic waste in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas, which has a general energy output of three megawatts. To provide perspective, one megawatt hour can power an electric vehicle for 3,600 miles or toast 89,000 slices of bread!
We are currently trialling new ‘blinding bags’, which disguise the identity of all wines tasted at the Decanter World Wine Awards. We use 19,500 throughout the awards, which are usually recycled through our waste partner at the end of the event. In 2025, we’ll be trialling a batch of reusable bags for the first time, with a view to switching permanently to this more sustainable solution.

We won’t be stopping here either, as we’re always looking for new ways to become more sustainable when staging our events. Watch this space for further developments.
When creating our exceptional events, the Decanter team keeps a close eye on minimising environmental impact
