Capturing a moment in history with Taylor’s Single Harvest 1975 Tawny Port
What were you doing back in 1975? It was a year of tremendous change on the international stage – the Vietnam War ended, the Helsinki Accords led to the partial thawing of the Cold War, and Queen took the UK’s Christmas number one spot with their epic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
Away from world events, and a year on from Portugal’s own Carnation Revolution, farmers set about harvesting grapes in the Douro Valley that would one day become Taylor’s Single Harvest 1975 Tawny Port. After spending 50 years slumbering in seasoned oak casks, the 1975 Tawny is taking its place alongside the other bottles in Taylor’s Single Harvest Port series, which began with the 1964 release and complements the Golden Age 50 Years Old Tawny, launched in 2022.
‘Each release in our Single Harvest collection is an opportunity to reflect on significant moments in history and to celebrate the years they represent – 1975 was a year of transformation and change across the world,’ says Adrian Bridge, Taylor’s chief executive; ‘With this limited edition, we present the ideal wine for marking 50th anniversary celebrations worldwide, offering a refined testament to the passage of time and Taylor’s mastery of cask ageing.’
Remarkable depth and sophistication
Taylor’s holds an enviable selection of very old cask-aged Ports in its cellars, yet bottles in the rare Single Harvest Port series are only released from years that have displayed exceptional quality. Matured in Taylor’s historic lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, the 1975 is set to delight both wine enthusiasts and luxury collectors.
‘Taylor’s Single Harvest Ports are living testaments to the passing of time and the artistry of cask ageing,’ explains David Guimaraens, the Port house’s head winemaker and chief blender, adding, ‘The 1975 reveals remarkable depth and sophistication, the result of five decades of slow and meticulous maturation.’
Its rich chestnut colour and broad amber rim offer a hint of the indulgent delights that await. On the nose, its elegant, floral perfume of cedary cigar box aromas mingle with notes of wild rosemary, thyme and a kiss of fresh mint, leading into an opulent core of red cherry compote, tea leaf, treacle and wild honey. Complex yet fresh, luscious yet lifted, the palate ranges from apricots and blood orange marmalade to dried figs and rum baba, all the while balanced by fresh acidity, which lasts through to its bright, lean and harmonious finish.
While the 1975 Tawny is an exceptional pairing for almond, caramel and fig flavours – with its versatility ranging from crème brûlée to fresh strawberries – it’s so complex that it sits outstandingly well on its own, or perhaps paired with simple dried fruit and walnuts after a meal, chilled ever so slightly to between 12ºC and 16ºC. It’s ready to drink and doesn’t need decanting, making it a simple yet elegant and indulgent digestif.
Few luxury gifts can match an aged Single Harvest Port. Bottled in Taylor’s bespoke frosted glass and presented in an elegant wooden case, the 1975 Tawny is sure to delight the lucky recipient. Its limited availability makes it not only a collector’s item, but also a noteworthy option for investors looking to add to their cellar.
When wine enthusiasts see the year of the harvest on the 1975 Tawny’s label, they’ll be transported back to moments from their youth, or perhaps memories of their parents or grandparents. This is a bottle that will connect them with history.
