A LOVE letter you can wear
The story of Clogau jewellery dates all the way back to 1854, when gold was discovered at the Clogau St David gold mine in Snowdonia, North Wales. Producing the finest Welsh gold until its first closure in 1911, the mine lay dormant until 1989 when it was rediscovered by local businessman William (Bill) Roberts.
Bill began a small-scale operation to find any undiscovered gold hiding inside. In 1992, he spent countless hours turning the precious metal into exquisite jewellery, inspired by the area of outstanding natural beauty in which it was found. Now, Bill’s son Ben runs the business, still using rare Welsh gold mined last century to create every unique piece.

When I first visited the mine with my father, I saw the gold in its raw form. I was struck by the pale rose-yellow tone, caused by nearby copper deposits, giving the gold a quality unlike anything I had seen or have seen since.

Best-kept secret
Despite North Wales once being the area to produce the most gold in the UK, mining no longer takes place. As such, Welsh gold is now one of the most rare and sought-after precious metals, and stock is in high demand.
Every Clogau piece contains just a small amount of the Welsh gold mined by William Roberts and his family, making them not only completely unique, but an instant heirloom. This small addition of the precious metal gives Clogau jewellery extra special meaning, while preserving supplies and making the brand accessible to all.
An instant heirloom
Welsh gold holds a cherished place in the history of the Royal Family, particularly in matters of love. A kilo of the rare metal was once donated to the Royal Family and has been used to make their wedding rings for over 100 years. Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the first to wear a Welsh gold wedding ring when she wed the then Duke of York, later King George VI, in 1923.
This tradition was proudly continued by their daughters – Queen Elizabeth II when she married Prince Philip in 1947, and Princess Margaret when she wed Antony Armstrong-Jones. It remains very much alive today, with King Charles and Queen Camilla choosing Welsh gold to cement their vows in 2005, and both Prince William and Prince Harry followed suit for their own ceremonies in 2011 and 2018.

It all started at the Clogau St David's gold mine, situated in Bontddu, near Barmouth in Gwynedd, North Wales. Gold was discovered at the mine in 1854 and the location continued to be part of the ‘gold rush’ until 1911.
In 1989, William Roberts discovered the disused gold mine and planned to turn it into a tourist attraction. But because the mine is deep in the Snowdonia mountains, the Snowdonia National Park Authority stopped him from going ahead with his plan. Instead, he decided to see if any gold could still be found somewhere inside the mine. The risk paid off and the first Clogau jewellery collection, made up of just five pieces, was born in 1992. They were sold in small gift shops near the mine, but the gold mined at
that time is still used in Clogau pieces being made today.
As well as being deeply connected to the region’s history, the Clogau business is also a family business - in more ways than one. William and his wife Margaret spent hours designing the first jewellery pieces together and William’s family is still in charge of the company today. And that family connection was also present in the mines - the miners who worked the Clogau St David's site in the 90s were the direct descendants of the original miners who first struck gold there in 1854.

Finding gold in most mines around the world is like finding the cream in a sponge cake. Finding Welsh gold on the other hand is like finding the sixpence in the biggest Christmas cake you could imagine. There’s no pattern, no logic, and you never know when you’re just inches away.
