The Who What Wear 100: Every Spring 2024 Item to Shop This Season
You've never seen the 26-year-old quite like this.
The arrival of spring also means the arrival of a fresh set of colors that are primed to define the season. We've been reporting on the dominance of burgundy since last year, including the shade Gucci Rosso that Creative Director Sabato De Sarno introduced on the brand's S/S 24 runway for his debut collection. It has already made a major impact on fashion, and shades of merlot, oxblood, and Chianti are permeating the new spring arrivals. Butter yellow and eggshell, too, are back and stronger than ever. Less expected shades are also setting the tone for the season. Dove gray might be the more obvious choice in fall but is winning out nonetheless. Olive green is the color to watch, as we are seeing it show up across swimwear and the season's most in-demand bags. It was also prevalent on the fall/winter 2024 runways, so the color clearly has long legs.

Which pieces are so good they land in the closets of Who What Wear editors? A handful are taking over the wardrobes of our fashion team, from the office to the streets of NYC and L.A. Nearly everyone on the team owns a great tote, and timed perfectly for the takeover of lived-in, Birkin-ified bags, our editors are filling them to the brim with outfit changes for morning workouts and evening events. Top picks from the team include Bottega Veneta's Andiamo bag as well as DeMellier's New York tote. For wallet-friendly finds, brands such as Aritzia, J.Crew, and Staud are winning out. Tennis bracelets and sculptural earrings are also a hit and starting to dominate in the jewelry space. We're seeing the pendulum swing from super-oversize everything to fitted shapes, especially in the pant department—Lafayette 148's cigarette pants and Citizens of Humanity's Zurie jeans take on tapered shapes that are increasingly winning over our editors.

We're nearing the time of the year to book some flights and turn on our "out of office" notices. Alongside that comes vacation packing for upcoming trips, so what are the suitcase-worthy items to take on a holiday? For starters, swimsuits that range from colorful string bikinis to one-pieces with heritage prints. Shoes are taking on cool new directions—Amanu's gold-plated slides are practically jewelry for your feet, and colorful knotted sandals are set to be a key buy of the season. Zankov is the brand on every fashion person's radar, and the fashion house's beautiful knit dresses feel especially vacation-worthy. Don't forget outfit finishers such as bamboo-handle bags, corded necklaces, and oversize goggle sunglasses.

What is in demand right now in fashion—like really, really in demand? We did some research to uncover the designer pieces that will be in every style insider's wardrobe for spring. Alaïa's Le Teckel bag is already one of the bags of the season, and the return of the JPG Birkin on the Hermès F/W 24 runways has insiders lining up to buy vintage versions of the iconic bag. The same can be said for Chanel's Mary Jane flats, as the shoes are selling out so fast there are very few sizes available in stores. The Loro Piana Rebecca ballerina shoes and Prada's satin mules are also ones to know. Peter Hawkings brought back an archival belt for his debut collection at Tom Ford, and it has already been spotted on celebs such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. In the realm of clothing, the fashion set is turning to brands like High Sport, Khaite, Toteme, and Tory Burch for modern-day sportswear pieces that can elevate everyday dressing.

If you're looking to shop beyond one season, a smart way to do that is by investing in great wardrobe staples you can wear now and rewear for years to come. From season to season, we see many of the same pieces repeated—albeit with updated shapes, proportions, and colorways that make them feel especially relevant. Phoebe Philo is setting the tone for fresh silhouettes, and trench coats have taken on high funnel necklines. Utility pieces will be in every fashion person's closet thanks to Anthony Vaccarello's S/S 24 Saint Laurent runway, which put safari-inspired fashion at the center of the collection. Throwback sneakers are a key shoe style to own, especially pairs from cult collabs with designers such as Wales Bonner and Bode. Jeans in an indigo wash are an essential. Some designer investment pieces, too, have achieved timeless status. Cartier's Tank Louis finished with a leather band has existed in this space for decades, and The Row's Margaux bag—recently named "a Birkin in the making" by Business of Fashion—has the makings of a modern-day heirloom piece.

The most in-the-know style insiders are always a step ahead when it comes to unlocking the next directional fashion finds. You know, those pieces that set the tone for what season-defining style looks like. If you want to get ahead of the curve, we have some predictions about the key buys and exact pieces that are primed to dominate this season. Conversation-starting accessories are already the talk of the town, including Chanel's flip-flops finished with a CC embellishment, the latest Miu Miu x New Balance sneakers that debuted on the runway, and unexpected staples such as sheer pencil skirts and jackets with built-in capes. Plus, barrel jeans are shaping up to be the jeans of 2024. Oh, and Rhode's Lip Case has already gone viral and is set to be one of the key IYKYK pieces to have in rotation—if you can order one before it sells out again.

Cape coats! Court heels! Eighties earrings! In fashion, the best styling ideas and most directional outfits are often the result of those who test-drive the latest trends to hit the runways and the street style scene. One way to try them without a major commitment is affordable finds that aren't a big investment. Our picks range from easy-to-wear trends to those you'll only spot on early adopters. Crinkled shift dresses, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy–inspired acetate headbands, and printed polo tops each take cues from the major trends from the runways but can blend into your spring wardrobe. Capri pants may take more courage to try out, but we would argue that they are set to be a new staple in just a few months.

Styling details can really make the outfit, especially in the form of great accessories that push a look into a new direction. A leather top-handle bag immediately morphs into a personality piece once it's covered in charms, tassels, and key chains. A tailored black jacket is injected with conversation-starting details with the addition of a brooch. A pleated skirt and polo shirt feel less preppy and more editorial with the addition of colorful swim briefs peeking out from underneath, as inspired by the Miu Miu S/S 24 runway. Pillbox hats, too, have been a surprising piece we've seen everywhere from the collections of The Row and Alaïa to the street style scene at fashion month. The list doesn't end there, as we are seeing other key accessories win out for spring. Standouts to have in your arsenal? Belts with jewelry-like buckles, pendant necklaces suspended on cords, gray tights, shield sunglasses, and silver cuffs also land on the short list for spring. Some are understated, and others are commanding, but each has the power to take even the simplest looks into new territory.

The mood of the season is elegance. On the runways and the street style scene alike, fashion has entered a new era of glamour and opulence that is charting the path for where style is headed this season and beyond. The swan-like fashion is being embodied by sophisticated pieces such as jewelry-like cocktail watches, heavy satin evening jackets, hourglass-shaped blazers with nipped-in waists, A-line dress and skirt silhouettes, and pillbox hats that feel like they have been plucked from another era. This time around, however, there are updated proportions, details, and styling ideas that make them feel entirely modern. What's old has become new again. Many of these pieces haven't been "in" or in circulation on the fashion scene for many years, which is perhaps why they feel so fresh.

Peak wedding season is just around the corner, and the best wedding guest pieces of the year are flooding into the market. Bernadette has become one of the go-to brands for best dressed wedding guests—it somehow balances details like sweet bows with an undeniable element of cool. Minimalistic sequin dresses feel primed for an elegant evening, and Staud has a version in burgundy you should consider adding to your shopping list this season. For a more casual setting, Australian brand SIR should be top of mind. This season, the brand has a beautiful apricot linen dress finished with stone straps that belongs at a great beach wedding. For outfit-finishing elements, look for strappy heels to pair with different outfits and get you through multiple events, a satin bag in an unexpected shade like pale pink, or earrings from buzzy brand Lié Studio.
