There's something about autumn that always feels like fashion's true reset. After the ease of linen separates and floaty summer dresses, the return of boots, coats and layers signals a fresh start and an opportunity to revisit our capsule wardrobes in a meaningful way. Autumn has long been the season most synonymous with polish, and 2025 is certainly no exception. The colours are richer, the textures more tactile and the silhouettes sharper, all of which combine to make it one of the most exciting times to invest in fashion.
Over the past few months, we've analysed the biggest autumn/winter 2025 trends from the runways, and more recently, watched how they've begun to filter into the looks of those in the know. The result is a clear picture of the pieces that define the season; items that feel current, but crucially, not fleeting. This is what we aim to provide you with in everything we do here at Who What Wear UK: considered recommendations that go beyond the season or year. Naturally, this was of the highest priority when we began assembling our edit of the most important buys of autumn—all 100 of them. None of the buys we've chosen are frivolous or overly trend-led; instead, they strike that rare balance of being simultaneously directional and timeless, meaning they'll earn their keep in your wardrobe for years to come.
With that in mind, allow us to guide you through the 100 chicest buys of autumn 2025. From luxurious outerwear to versatile accessories and elevated staples, each has been handpicked by our team of editors for its ability to capture the mood of the season whilst offering true endurance. Consider this the ultimate lowdown of what really matters fashion-wise right now, but also what will continue to feel relevant well beyond this autumn.
By Sophie Robyn Watson & Maxine eggenberger
You've never seen the 26-year-old quite like this.
The term "lazy luxury" has been bandied around for a minute now, but what actually is it? My interpretation is that it’s a natural progression to the quiet luxury aesthetic we found ourselves in a few seasons back, but approached with a discernable ease. Demure, chic but pared back in a way that feels more effortless, with a focus on comfort now being paramount. Think enveloping jackets in soft wools, tufted bouclé fabrics, cloud-soft pull-on trousers, cosy shearling slippers and cuddle-worthy bags, with long pendants and cuffed jewellery for interest. Layers should be loose and free-flowing—not too far removed from your most prized pyjamas. Emulate Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and style your looks head-to-toe in monochromatic colours of biscuit, buttermilk and taupe, and get ready to bed down for autumn in languid style.

Which pieces are so good they land in the closets of Who What Wear editors? A handful are taking over the wardrobes of our fashion team, from the office to the streets of NYC and L.A. Nearly everyone on the team owns a great tote, and timed perfectly for the takeover of lived-in, Birkin-ified bags, our editors are filling them to the brim with outfit changes for morning workouts and evening events. Top picks from the team include Bottega Veneta's Andiamo bag as well as DeMellier's New York tote. For wallet-friendly finds, brands such as Aritzia, J.Crew, and Staud are winning out. Tennis bracelets and sculptural earrings are also a hit and starting to dominate in the jewelry space. We're seeing the pendulum swing from super-oversize everything to fitted shapes, especially in the pant department—Lafayette 148's cigarette pants and Citizens of Humanity's Zurie jeans take on tapered shapes that are increasingly winning over our editors.
Denim has always been a fabric designers love to play with, especially in the cooler months, but this autumn's interpretation is bolder and more assertive than any in recent memory, with the material dominating looks as a whole. The Canadian Tuxedo (the practice of wearing something denim on both your top and bottom halves)—something I feel comfortable speaking about, being half Canadian myself—has long been adopted in fashion circles as a cool outfit formula, but I don't think I’ve ever seen it done with such polish. From chocolate-brown tones that give denim separates instant gloss to Alaïa's refined take on the denim dress, there are so many fresh ways to channel denim for those of us who live in the material from September to April (and, let's face it, depending on the forecast, well into the summer). If this is a wardrobe category you haven't invested in for a while, autumn 2025 is absolutely the time to do so.
What is in demand right now in fashion—like really, really in demand? We did some research to uncover the designer pieces that will be in every style insider's wardrobe for spring. Alaïa's Le Teckel bag is already one of the bags of the season, and the return of the JPG Birkin on the Hermès F/W 24 runways has insiders lining up to buy vintage versions of the iconic bag. The same can be said for Chanel's Mary Jane flats, as the shoes are selling out so fast there are very few sizes available in stores. The Loro Piana Rebecca ballerina shoes and Prada's satin mules are also ones to know. Peter Hawkings brought back an archival belt for his debut collection at Tom Ford, and it has already been spotted on celebs such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. In the realm of clothing, the fashion set is turning to brands like High Sport, Khaite, Toteme, and Tory Burch for modern-day sportswear pieces that can elevate everyday dressing.
If you're looking to shop beyond one season, a smart way to do that is by investing in great wardrobe staples you can wear now and rewear for years to come. From season to season, we see many of the same pieces repeated—albeit with updated shapes, proportions, and colorways that make them feel especially relevant. Phoebe Philo is setting the tone for fresh silhouettes, and trench coats have taken on high funnel necklines. Utility pieces will be in every fashion person's closet thanks to Anthony Vaccarello's S/S 24 Saint Laurent runway, which put safari-inspired fashion at the center of the collection. Throwback sneakers are a key shoe style to own, especially pairs from cult collabs with designers such as Wales Bonner and Bode. Jeans in an indigo wash are an essential. Some designer investment pieces, too, have achieved timeless status. Cartier's Tank Louis finished with a leather band has existed in this space for decades, and The Row's Margaux bag—recently named "a Birkin in the making" by Business of Fashion—has the makings of a modern-day heirloom piece.
The most in-the-know style insiders are always a step ahead when it comes to unlocking the next directional fashion finds. You know, those pieces that set the tone for what season-defining style looks like. If you want to get ahead of the curve, we have some predictions about the key buys and exact pieces that are primed to dominate this season. Conversation-starting accessories are already the talk of the town, including Chanel's flip-flops finished with a CC embellishment, the latest Miu Miu x New Balance sneakers that debuted on the runway, and unexpected staples such as sheer pencil skirts and jackets with built-in capes. Plus, barrel jeans are shaping up to be the jeans of 2024. Oh, and Rhode's Lip Case has already gone viral and is set to be one of the key IYKYK pieces to have in rotation—if you can order one before it sells out again.
Cape coats! Court heels! Eighties earrings! In fashion, the best styling ideas and most directional outfits are often the result of those who test-drive the latest trends to hit the runways and the street style scene. One way to try them without a major commitment is affordable finds that aren't a big investment. Our picks range from easy-to-wear trends to those you'll only spot on early adopters. Crinkled shift dresses, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy–inspired acetate headbands, and printed polo tops each take cues from the major trends from the runways but can blend into your spring wardrobe. Capri pants may take more courage to try out, but we would argue that they are set to be a new staple in just a few months.
Styling details can really make the outfit, especially in the form of great accessories that push a look into a new direction. A leather top-handle bag immediately morphs into a personality piece once it's covered in charms, tassels, and key chains. A tailored black jacket is injected with conversation-starting details with the addition of a brooch. A pleated skirt and polo shirt feel less preppy and more editorial with the addition of colorful swim briefs peeking out from underneath, as inspired by the Miu Miu S/S 24 runway. Pillbox hats, too, have been a surprising piece we've seen everywhere from the collections of The Row and Alaïa to the street style scene at fashion month. The list doesn't end there, as we are seeing other key accessories win out for spring. Standouts to have in your arsenal? Belts with jewelry-like buckles, pendant necklaces suspended on cords, gray tights, shield sunglasses, and silver cuffs also land on the short list for spring. Some are understated, and others are commanding, but each has the power to take even the simplest looks into new territory.
The mood of the season is elegance. On the runways and the street style scene alike, fashion has entered a new era of glamour and opulence that is charting the path for where style is headed this season and beyond. The swan-like fashion is being embodied by sophisticated pieces such as jewelry-like cocktail watches, heavy satin evening jackets, hourglass-shaped blazers with nipped-in waists, A-line dress and skirt silhouettes, and pillbox hats that feel like they have been plucked from another era. This time around, however, there are updated proportions, details, and styling ideas that make them feel entirely modern. What's old has become new again. Many of these pieces haven't been "in" or in circulation on the fashion scene for many years, which is perhaps why they feel so fresh.
Peak wedding season is just around the corner, and the best wedding guest pieces of the year are flooding into the market. Bernadette has become one of the go-to brands for best dressed wedding guests—it somehow balances details like sweet bows with an undeniable element of cool. Minimalistic sequin dresses feel primed for an elegant evening, and Staud has a version in burgundy you should consider adding to your shopping list this season. For a more casual setting, Australian brand SIR should be top of mind. This season, the brand has a beautiful apricot linen dress finished with stone straps that belongs at a great beach wedding. For outfit-finishing elements, look for strappy heels to pair with different outfits and get you through multiple events, a satin bag in an unexpected shade like pale pink, or earrings from buzzy brand Lié Studio.

As the nights draw in and the lights are lowered, a certain glamour emerges from the shadows. Toying with the classic mix of onyx black and pearlescent white, plus a ripple of deep mahogany brown, this nighttime mood is artfully finished with slim waist belts, molten silver jewellery and vampy shoes. Outerwear is lacquered croc-effect or shearling, with dresses bringing the drama in lace fabrics or pleated silhouettes. Hosiery is essential to this aesthetic—the more translucent and threadbare the denier, the better. This will be the aesthetic that defines party season, but I'm already seeing it creep into the autumn consciousness now by way of silk camisoles layered over wide-leg, tailored trousers or an ornate bra peeking out from under an otherwise demure satin blouse.
Picture this: it's the '90s, you've just moved to the "big city" and you've landed your first office job. Fortunately, you've come into a little bit of money through means that no one can quite put their finger on. Idle gossip aside, it allows you to dress the part. That's what the undercurrent of this autumn trend is. Workplace style has been one of the biggest talking points of 2025, with #corporategirlie looks taking over Instagram and TikTok, but this is the time of year you can expect it to really flourish. Think frock coats that billow as you walk, pencil skirts made flirty with lace trims, shoes that are fancy, yes, but also structured enough to climb that career ladder. They say to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, and if being the office siren with the corner office to boot sounds appealing, this is where to put your focus.
Colour plays an important role every season, but autumn is when it gets the most attention, and rightly so. After months of wearing whites, creams and beiges, the fashion set relish the invitation the new season brings to experiment with their palettes again. And whilst this doesn't mean a sudden departure from shades that are traditionally considered expensive-looking—think camel, brown, burgundy and navy—alongside them are hues that stand out, too. 2025's biggest colour trends lean sugared almond in tone; think barely-there yellows, pale purples and subtle blues, and no one is expecting those to disappear overnight. Rather, the secret lies in combining them with pieces that subscribe to the season's moodier hallmarks to create a blend that feels very now.

We saw the rampant return of bohemian chic this summer, which has been on the rise since Chemena Kamali took the helm at Chloé and made her runway debut for the Parisian powerhouse last autumn. A year on, and we're doubling down on the movement with ruffled, semi-transparent dresses, embroidered separates in rich hues, snakeskin-effect leathers and suede everything, from slouchy bags to fringed jackets, all layered together to create a chic boho pile-up for autumn. Look to Zimmermann, Jimmy Choo and Valentino for luxe takes on the trend, or if the high street is more your thing, Rixo, Zara and Sézane are all offering up boho in abundance ahead of the chilly season.
Zermatt, Aspen, Val d'Isère. The world's most exclusive spots have one very obvious thing in common: big mountain energy. These skiing and hiking resorts have luxurious reputations that precede them and a clientele that's more than willing to pay for the mere association, so what one wears when in these surroundings, or at the very least, to look like they could afford to visit them, means something. Because of this, we've seen a new wave of styling emerge, that of the mountain dweller with means. We’re talking Fair Isle knitwear made with the highest-quality wool on the Altuzarra runway, Gucci boots that combine high fashion and high altitude (finished with the brand's iconic metal horsebit detail) and shearling outerwear from Toteme that you’ll never want to take off. That said, it's not just premium designers who are championing this cold-weather old-money look for autumn; note its presence at COS by way of checked shirting and at H&M under the guise of chunky cream cable knits.

This year, the worlds of fashion and sport haven't collided—their courtship is a storied one that goes way beyond the confines of 2025—but intensified. Consider it a new level of the relationship. Beyond Wimbledon and the player-inspired clothing that annually accompanies it (let’s hear it for the tennis dress!), we've seen more crossover between luxury fashion and sport than ever before, from Louis Vuitton's partnership with Formula 1 or Tommy Hilfiger's alignment with the U.S. SailGP team. These associations have ultimately impacted the way people dress and influenced what we decide to add to our wardrobes. Trainers have never been more in demand than they are now. Roomy polo shirts with contrasting collars have become the go-to top to wear with jeans for celebrities including Rihanna, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. Brands know this, and for autumn, they've delivered perhaps the chicest game-day-inspired collections so far. From suede bowling bags to cashmere rugby stripes and elevated track pants, this is the intersection of fashion and sport at its finest.
When the city gets too much, the desire for pastoral pastures peaks. I've taken note, as have cult brands such as Dôen, Free People and Damson Madder. Wardrobe staples that will take you from country walks to coastal retreats are key, with the barn jacket re-emerging as the outerwear star of the year once again. Fresh takes on plaids or fuzzy knitted stripes styled with boat shoes or very-much-in-demand Frye boots give this trend a practicality which is ripe for staycations and weekend getaways. Tones are muted and drawn from nature—think rusted browns, stormy sky blues and earthy greens.
There is a small pool of extremely stylish women in New York City who are setting the tone for timeless and classic style this season. Look to Alexis Badiyi, Coco Schiffer and Christie Tyler and you'll see what I mean. What I've observed is their adoption of '80s-inspired tailoring, '90s minimalism and menswear-coded basics, which are then punctuated with luxurious bags, heavy sunglasses, practical loafers and low heels for a look which exudes a considered power. This aesthetic is spot on for creative souls; the writers, poets and fashion people who like to look anti-trend but also curated. Brands such as Róhe, Toteme, Massimo Dutti and Khaite are the labels of note, taking the wearer from desk-side to the ballet in one fell swoop.
