"I like when people
hear me coming."
I'm a firm believer that accessories (and attitude) make an outfit. I often spend longer than I'd like to admit in front of the mirror holding up different earrings and necklaces, trying to figure out what kind of energy I want to bring to the day. And if there's anyone who understands the power of great jewelry, it's Who What Wear's associate director of special projects, Kristen Nichols.
A longtime fan of jewelry brand Mikimoto, Kristen believes you should wear pearls more often. "I think pearls are worth investing in because they have a rare combination of timelessness and versatility," she says. To showcase pearls' versatility, Kristen styled three outfits with Mikimoto jewelry: one for hosting at home, one for the office, and one for a night out.
For Kristen, the secret to making pearls feel modern is to wear them with pieces she loves. "When hosting at home, I want my look to be effortless but considered. There's something timeless about a great pair of jeans and a crisp button-down, and I love how Mikimoto pearls add a touch of polish to that combination," she explains.

Kristen takes a different approach to her office look, styling Mikimoto pearls with a knit and skirt. The layered necklaces make this look particularly interesting, with the black pearls adding beautiful contrast. It's an easy way to make pearls feel a little less traditional in an office setting. "I wanted the pearls to feel like a natural extension of the outfit rather than an afterthought," Kristen says. "I love how they bring softness and femininity to more structured pieces while remaining professional and modern." Kristen is drawn to Mikimoto's exceptional craftsmanship. "There's a luminosity to these pieces that appears effortless, but the closer you look, the more you appreciate the craftsmanship that went into each piece."

The Chic Accessories Editors Always Reach for,
No Matter the Dress Code
For a night out, Kristen styles a black midi dress with a pearl choker that steals the show. It's not your classic strand of pearls—it's fresh, modern, unexpected, and just plain cool. If you wore it to a holiday party, you'd immediately get compliments. "There's something so striking about pearls against black; the contrast feels classic, but never predictable," Kristen says. "I wanted the overall look to be simple and elegant, allowing the beauty and craftsmanship of the Mikimoto pieces to shine."
The sapphire details stand out against the pearls and classic button-down. The contrast between casual clothing and fine jewelry makes the outfit work. As Kristen puts it, "When you let pearls exist alongside the clothes you actually live in, they feel personal rather than precious."
