nthony D’Argenzio of Zio and Sons appreciates a chill
morning—even more so since he recently became a new dad. The busy creative is usually the first one up in his home, careful not to wake his daughter. “I find serenity in the quiet, so I try not to schedule anything too early,” he says. After mentally preparing for the day, he takes a eucalyptus-scented shower; the smell reminds him of his upbringing in Northern California. Next comes coffee. “My thought process is sharpest in the morning, so I’m at my computer by 7:30,” he says. “Usually caffeine is my main source of energy.”
For his daily cortado, D’Argenzio uses De’Longhi’s to freshly grind the beans. Though he considers the metal hardware of the machine aesthetically pleasing, he also likes that it’s easy to use and serves a clear purpose. The designer’s love of form and function extends to his work, too.

As head of Zio and Sons, he creates bespoke spaces using unique finishes like Venetian plaster and hand-painted Moroccan tiles. From prop styling to interior design, the studio offers a range of services that follow a simple formula: Start with a textural neutral palette and layer in modern furniture with vintage finds for contrast.
Case in point: , his property in the eponymous upstate New York town. The hospitality project offers D’Argenzio-designed apartments for photoshoots, short stays or long term residences. There, he bounces from styling a shoot to refurbishing a countertop, while also managing the vast responsibilities that come with owning two companies.
Beauty with purpose is an integral part of D’Argenzio’s approach. He stresses that even though he is forever collecting artwork, props, and other vintage pieces, design is largely about problem-solving. When a space functions well, it’s easier to incorporate decorative items in a way
that works. That innovation can be seen in a recent project he designed.
“I have an odd-shaped nook above a stairwell,” D’Argenzio explained, “It was hard to figure out what to put there
because it also has a really nice window.” He ended up
building a custom platform daybed with linen down cushions as a creative approach to carving out a special spot to enjoy his brew. “It’s a great place to sit and read or, you know, daydream,” he says. “Sometimes I get to have a more relaxed coffee there in the second half of the day.”
