That fluidity from one space to the next acts as a chromatic connector. In Hallas’s hands, seemingly incongruous periods and palettes figure out a way to play nice with each other, and the overall effect benefits from that cross-pollination. “I always want to communicate in my home that you do not need to be scared of living with color,” says Hallas. Besides, a room for her is never really “done”—just a canvas waiting to be reimagined in a fresh coat of paint.

Likewise the living room revisits traditional details from a fresh perspective. “It was entirely white and plain, but most of all it was full of potential,” says Hallas. A lipstick red Arne Jacobsen Egg chair catches your eye just as much as the Brutalist-style Heinz Lilienthal coffee table it’s paired with—not to mention the chrome and purple Verner Panton Wire Cone chair.
The kitchen, meanwhile—a popular hangout for the kids (“Samuel is in there all the time eating everything he can get his hands on”)—is the one room she longs to push further with an actual renovation. “I wish I could do a total transformation,” she shares. (Funny enough, it was the view from the window above the sink and onto the 17th-century courtyard that hooked Hallas when she first saw the apartment.) Since she can’t gut the room entirely, she outfitted it with pine-hued cabinets and a squiggly orange and teal dining set. The same green-blue used on the living room wainscoting extends here to meet the ceiling in a subtle, sweeping gesture.
