For this stylist, bringing the outdoors into
her bedroom comes naturally.
“It’s like a jewel box that opens up to the garden. We wanted to create
a sanctuary
space that felt
free of all the kids’ stuff—a place to recharge.”
With such keen awareness of the planet, thoughtful shopping is a nonnegotiable for Kendra. “I really like switching up my decor, but I try not to buy new things all the time,” she says. “I also celebrate any change we can make that has a lighter impact on the environment.”
But perhaps the most resourceful—and graceful—element of her decorating philosophy is the circularity of her nature finds. Says Kendra, “Once I’m done with it, I can just compost it.”
“I really like keeping the tones in the room simple. It’s a place to reset,” she says. “The bedding has such a crisp, light feel, and I love that the hue is a muted, beautiful neutral. I am drawn to colors you would typically find in nature.” In fact, an original print of one of Kendra’s favorite Marin County views in similar tones, shot by Seth, hangs above the bed.
You’ll find the real deal throughout: Towering branches in a Giselle Hicks vase dress up the bedside tables, which are stumps made from upcycled local Douglas-fir wood. Dried seaweed gently rests against a wall. A smooth rock sits inside a shell—a miniature zen moment. “I have a foraged shell that holds incense that I love so much,” Kendra shares about the relic she acquired beachside in Mexico.
After recently completing a year-and-a-half renovation, the couple now have an airy new primary bedroom in which to rest their heads. “It’s like a jewel box that opens up to the garden,” she shares. A wood-burning fireplace, floor-to-ceiling steel-frame doors, and plastered walls (which Kendra proudly did herself) don’t hurt either: “We wanted to create a sanctuary space that felt free of all the kids’ stuff—a place to recharge.”
To help foster that intention on the daily, Smoot turned to Calvin Klein’s Naturals bedding collection, draping her locally made wood bed frame in the earthy Sandalwood colorway.
The Calvin Klein Naturals collection —which is made from cotton blended with Tencel Lyocell fibers with REFIBRA technology, made from sustainable wood sources and recycled cotton scraps—comes in a variety of shades inspired by our natural environment.
For stylist Kendra Smoot, no stone goes unturned, quite literally. Cracked shells and shapely pebbles from brisk beach strolls are suddenly beautiful bedside accents. The overgrown jasmine from a friend’s backyard becomes the anchor for a billowing centerpiece. “I notice changes in the seasons. I love to take in how things evolve and bring that change inside,” Kendra says. “I really get such a buzz from being in nature.” And her relationship with the outdoors extends well beyond her day job—Kendra’s organic approach is on display in every corner of her Marin County, California, home, a four-bedroom backdrop for her bounty that she shares with her husband, photographer Seth Smoot, and their three children.
