As a self-described "connoisseur of cool," Kellie Brown is a cultivator of not just one but many communities across personal style (peep her main IG account), interiors (see: @deeplymadlymodern), and travel (@plussizefriendly). She’s a real-life pillar of connection and creativity, opening the doors of her L.A. and Palm Springs homes to family, friends, and the internet.
So when it came to redesigning a spare room in her Los Angeles home, Brown freed herself of categorizing it as either a guest room, a work space, or a content studio—instead, it functions as all three. She turned to Walmart to kit it out with everything from a sleek daybed for sleepovers to sculptural plants and lamps to set the mood for inspired productivity.
Like her job title, Brown refuses for her design aesthetic to be put in a neat little box. “My style doesn’t fit into one linear category,” she says. “I’m attracted to things that are beautiful. I like what I like and I mash it all together.” Below, Brown shares her tips for building a space that reels you in—and invites you to stay a while.

“No one loves the big light,”
Brown says with a wink, referencing always-controversial overhead fixtures. Kidding or not, Brown is serious about being intentional with ambient lighting as
a tool to keep guests and coworkers relaxed. “I like to create layers of lighting spread throughout the room to ensure the vibe is soft, warm, and inviting,” she says. Cue the arched rattan floor lamp and orange ceramic candle.)
A true extrovert, Brown fills her cup by hanging with friends and family. In preparation for long visits from her sister, she opted for an upholstered linen mid-century modern inspired daybed paired with a duo of white vintage tables. “People can sleep over and be comfortable, or take five and chill out on it during a workday,” she explains. (Anyone with a creative streak can appreciate the need to recharge between projects!)

My style
For overnight visitors, Brown has an inventory of necessities people may
have forgotten, like luxe cleansers and body wash. Storage for it was a key consideration. “I use the dresser as a place to store the products and tuck away blankets so that someone can pull whatever they need and be maximally comfortable,” she says, adding that “candles, comfy knits, and pillows are also warm touches that add to the vibe.” She styles the former right on top of the dresser alongside low-maintenance greenery and mirrored accents. We’d certainly never want to leave.
