STATE of

“
My appreciation for unique pieces and the stories they tell has only grown over the past year,” says Maggie Holladay, founder of vintage furniture and objects shop Claude Home. With a preference for classic designs, free-form shapes, and a neutral color palette, Holladay, who is bicoastal, was drawn to Maiden Home’s Spring 2021 Collection for her New York home base: an East Village loft that’s been her respite throughout the past year. In the collection, aptly titled The Art of the Home, each handcrafted furniture piece pairs the heritage techniques of North Carolina artisans with an elevated design aesthetic. With a focus on the inherent beauty of natural materials, the items are meant to age masterfully over time and are crafted to look—and feel—like works of art.
Like the influential artists who defined the neighborhood before her, Holladay finds inspiration in the downtown landscape, contrasting the grit of the city with her clean, pared-back style. “I’m at the center of my community here,” she says of the East Village. New York emboldens endless expression, and the history of the area fosters unrivaled ideation, creation, and collaboration. Her space is a physical manifestation of just that.
On Cloud 9
At the center of the room is the Muir Sofa. The artisanal ash wood base incorporates both form and function, serving as an additional surface for Holladay’s collection of treasures. “I love that I can curate things like small sculptures thoughtfully, avoiding clutter,” she notes. For comfort, a luxurious down-and-feather–filled cushion sits on top. Next to the nearly floor-to-ceiling windows, the performance bouclé fabric in a cool polar hue softens up the backdrop of neighboring buildings and fire escapes. “When the light comes in,” she says, “it looks like a cloud among the cityscape.”

Surface Level
As an object enthusiast, I’m obsessed with surfaces,” shares Holladay. Composed of three pieces of various heights and sizes, the Morro Nesting Table Set doesn’t just add depth to the open-concept space but also versatility. Easily movable and just as strong on their own as they are together, the tables remind Holladay of small but commanding sculptures with their clean lines and artful shapes. Positioned in front of the sofa, they offer dual surfaces for design and photo review. When placed a few inches from the main door, they’re ideal for displaying a vase of flowers,
a free-form sculpture, or a stack of magazines.

Take a Seat
Sitting adjacent to the windows, the minimalist Reyes Bench is a study in simplicity. Its clean lines and low profile highlight the natural wood grain, while the nubuck leather cushion in a soft taupe makes for a comfortable seating option. “I love the element of nature that the bench adds against the room’s brick backdrop,” says Holladay. Plus it’s not just furniture—it’s a conversation starter.
“I’m looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine with friends or hosting a dinner party,” she shares. “Before the pandemic I was always entertaining people here.” Now these pieces give new life to the space—ready and waiting for whatever lies ahead.
