Campanaro and Chacona also saw its potential. They could raise the ceilings to open up the space and easily renovate the dated kitchen. Besides, they know the real secret to extending a layout: Treat the outside areas as an extension of the house. A glass door in the kitchen leads to the back patio, where the couple created various zones for open-air living—a dining area with a table that seats six (there was no room for one inside) and a cozy hangout spot with sofa-like patio furniture (topped with Eskayel pillows, naturally), where they can entertain friends with their signature cocktail: mezcal with a squeeze of half a lime, club soda, a dash of bird’s-eye chili syrup, and a splash of grapefruit juice or kombucha.
Even though the outdoor square footage far exceeds the indoor, the couple found a way to further extend the backyard—at least visually. Campanaro covered the lower half of the fence in the same white paint that appears on the deck floor, then continued the treatment around the facade. The result is a horizon line that’s a clean, bright, and neutral backdrop for the duo to store their neon surfboards when they’re not riding them in Montauk.
